With the emergence of funk and disco in the 1970's, Billboard created its first "Disco Action" chart on October 26, 1974. Philadelphia based group MFSB is believed to have started this craze with the smash theme from Soul Train, "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)", released earlier in that year and reaching #1 on the Hot 100. This chart was designed to capture what the night clubs were playing back in the day. Many of these songs and artists had limited crossover success, and some didn't fare much better on the R&B Singles chart. Nonetheless, Billboard ran this 10 song chart but only for a limited time between October 26, 1974 and March 22, 1975, only to resume play on August 28, 1976. As per Joel Whitburn, I'll fill the gap in with Record World's "Disco File Top 20" chart to bridge the gap. It's true that discomania at its peak (mid 1970's to early-mid 80's) rivaled rock music on the Hot 100 and nearly saturated the market during the late 70's with Saturday Night Fever ruling the Billboard 200 for 24 weeks. Emerging from this pool was the "Queen Of Disco," Donna Summer, who was nearly unrivaled throughout the decade and was the original holder of many of this chart's earliest records. Let's boogie down and take a trip through the history of the Hot Dance Club Songs chart till demise around the start of the pandemic.
Also, keep in mind that due to the nature of Billboard's rules, entire albums and EPs could chart on here until January 1991.

Disco will splinter apart into several different genres at the turn of the 1980's, and a new breed of legends would take over with massive commercial success. As you can see below, synth pop and new wave groups (Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Thompson Twins) found a home here when the Second British Invasion occurred in the early to mid-80's. The decade's biggest stars, however, came in the form of two major dance divas: Madonna and Janet Jackson. Both had proven success on the Hot 100, consistently hitting the top 10 with every release. It's no wonder they generated so many hits as the mainstream embraced "dance-pop" and freestyle heavily throughout this time, heading into the 90's. However, due to the decline of funk and disco and the rise of house, electronic, new wave and hip hop, discotheques were a little more limited with their selections. The craze began to die but the clubs continued to thrive with new sounds. The "Hot Dance/Disco Club Play" chart would drop the disco by October 1984, and the chart's size would be reduced to a top 50 in March 1985.

The start of 1990's saw the rise of new jack swing and hip house and eurodisco throughout the decade. Nonetheless, Madonna, Janet and Whitney reigned supreme as women take hold of the top 4 with the most #1 hits. Donna Summer would score her most recent chart topper (Love Is The Healer) until 2008 with her comeback album, Crayons. The rate of number one hits in the 90's would increase and songs would considerably less time on the chart itself. A similar thing happened on the Country Singles chart in the mid-1980's until that began being compiled by Nielsen Broad Cast Data Systems. Unlike other Billboard charts which now utilized Nielsen data, Hot Dance Club Play continued to be compiled the old fashion way: surveying disc jockeys around the country, which may not be entirely accurate.
