This month was a bit of an outlier for me! I went to a music festival here in Austin and caught a concert featuring some of my favorite artists from beyond the country genre. At the festival, I not only saw Chris Stapleton, but also Willie Nelson, who joined him on stage for the first couple of songs. It was also my first time seeing Mickey Guyton live (amazing!). On top of that, I got to experience the incredible Orville Peck twice—once at the festival (where he also brought out Willie Nelson!) and later at a local venue for a full show.
Some standout non-country acts I saw included the Red Clay Strays, who mentioned that, while they appreciate being grouped with country music, they think of themselves more as rock, and Flipturn. And yes, I was thrilled to catch Chappell Roan's set as well.
In addition to the festival, I saw one of my favorite Americana artists, Gregory Alan Isakov, who now finds himself performing in arenas. Luckily for me, he was opening for Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, a band I’m a big fan of. It's always so inspiring to see an artist you’ve watched play small venues make it to the big stage!
Oh, and did I mention I saw Sturgill Simpson (aka Johnny Blue Skies)?! Absolutely amazing! Best live show of the year.
