"Honey" was a change and not as 'bright' as past lead singles, so I see why it didn't do as well at Top 40 radio as past hits. "My All," though, is an amazing ballad and should have gotten a better radio reception (at AC, if nothing else). It sold really well, too, and even did well on Total Request (the prequel to TRL) so the interest was there. My All definitely should have received more airplay on Pop/HAC/AC, absolutely agreed. I will never understand how a song with such a timeless quality and smooth, beautiful production only reached #18 on both Pop and AC at a time when similar songs like Un-Break My Heart by Toni Braxton did wonders on the same formats. It also sold over 1,4M at retail and actually enjoyed longevity on the charts (#99 on the Decade-End charts), so you'd expect radio to respond accordingly. Still, it remains one of her best-remembered songs by the public, so it became the classic ballad it was destined to become. stormlover74 yeah, Heartbreaker was a catchy song but similar sounding to Fantasy production-wise. I think, at the time, the explosion of teen-pop was one of the reasons that prevented the song from gaining strong airplay on Pop (it only reached #21). TGIFY was a cute album track but I totally understand why it's considered one of her weaker singles, so the unresponsiveness of Pop radio to it is hardly surprising.

"Heartbreaker" is interesting because it was actually liked among the younger crowd, as evidenced by it reaching retirement on TRL (which I think at that time was 60 days). It also had huge sales, which were ultimately cut short because it was a limited single. I don't know why it didn't do better at Top 40 radio, other than perhaps it's just because Mariah was on a general decline at that format (from "Honey" through "TGIFY" her run of peaks was 10-12-15-28-19-21-28 there). If nothing else "Heartbreaker" should have at least peaked higher than "I Still Believe" at Top 40, yet it didn't. Tommy conspiracy theorists unite lol.

I've always thought "Heartbreaker" should have returned her to her previous heights at pop. I honestly don't see why it's not pop friendly for that time, it definitely is more than "Honey."

Yeah, agreed with both of you. Heartbreaker was definitely a very pop and radio friendly song, I would've expected pop radio to have eaten it up, honestly. Also, the single was indeed big on TRL and it also enjoyed strong sales which shows there was interest by the public. Whether the whole drama with Tommy Mottola played a role or not is an interesting discussion also haha!
