I was just wondering, if an independent artist took his or her song to a major radio station, is there anty chance that it would get played?

It depends on the station. If it's Clear Channel, you have a 0% chance.

Here in Saginaw, there was a local band named Lucid Jones that had a few songs in decent rotation on WIOG in 2000, 2001, and 2002. But this seemed to stop shortly before June 2002, and I think I remember hearing that the band has since broken up.
While I think of it, I think their song "85" was #30 on IOG's 2002 year-end countdown.

Here in Kelowna, SunFM ran an unsigned band contest, with the winner getting pretty decent rotation. In fact, they're still getting played. I actually think that all of the Top 15 bands got some airplay.
SunFM also played a couple more local bands, with one, Redfish, getting a considerable amount of play last summer.
