This week, as they're set to take over #1 at Pop and Hot AC, Green Day's "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" will be the first song ever to go to #1 on six major formats in R&R. Here's a look at how close some other songs have come:
This mainly concerns the ten formats that I keep track of: Pop, Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, AC, Hot AC, Rock, Active Rock, Alternative and AAA. These are the formats where songs most frequently cross over between formats and to the pop chart. My records go back to mid-95, which is the year that the Urban AC, Active Rock and AAA charts all started.
As I mentioned in the CHR/Pop forum, the previous record was five formats, for "One Sweet Day": Pop, Rhythmic, AC, Hot AC and Urban AC.
Only a few other songs have been four-format #1s:
Pop / Alternative / Active Rock / Rock
Goo Goo Dolls - Name
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite
Nickelback - How You Remind Me
AAA / Alternative / Rock / Hot AC
Wallflowers - One Headlight
Pop / Hot AC / Rock / Active Rock
Creed - With Arms Wide Open
As for the rest of the songs that have topped three formats, here they are:
The most common trifecta:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Friends
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

And one that's only involved Rob Thomas:

Those are the only ones that have happened in both decades. As for the rest:

Probably the only effect of factoring in Country would be that Faith Hill's "Breathe" would also be listed, as that hit #1 on AC and Hot AC.
