It looks like NIN will be #1 afterall... The White Stripes aren't gaining a whole lot so far... you'd think that a song from a band like that would be doing better. Still, I don't find myself disappointed by any of these "smash debut" songs, except "Why Do You Love Me?" and "Beverly Hills". I predict that after NIN will be the Foo Fighters. They are already in the top-five.

Some new songs to consider: Billy Corgan - Walking Shade, Incubus - Make a Move, Staind - Right Here, and The Offspring - Can't Repeat.
I doubt any of those four songs will have smash debuts, based on a facts: (1) over-saturation with high-profile smash debuts, (2) Recent failures of Staind and Corgan, and (3) Make a Move and Can't Repeat aren't lead singles from new albums, but lead singles from collections (a soundtrack and a GH album).
1. Foo Fighters - Best of You (A) 2. Audioslave - Be Yourself (A-) 3. Coldplay - Speed of Sound (B+) 4. Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds (B-) 5. Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister (B-) 6. Incubus - Make a Move (B-) 7. The Offspring - Can't Repeat (C) 8. Staind - Right Here (C) 9. The White Stripes - Blue Orchid (C) 10. System of a Down - B.Y.O.B. (C-) 11. Garbage - Why Do You Love Me (C-) 12. Billy Corgan - Walking Shade (C-) 13. Beck - E-Pro (D) 14. Weezer - Beverly Hills (F)
A lot of the new "smash debut" songs have been underwhelming to me, especially Weezer. "Beverly Hills" is just pretentious shit, and Weezer is above that kind of song. (As is Beck and his song.) Garbage's song is too repetitive and got really annoying really fast. Staind's song is also disappointing, because they're continuing down the 3 Doors Down road.
The only songs that impress me among these are the songs by Foo Fighters, Audioslave, and Coldplay. I expected the FF and AS songs to be good, and they met my expectations. Coldplay's song surprised me - it's bordering on an A rating depending on how it holds up over time.
The other songs range from okay to boring to smoldering piles of shit.

"Beverly Hills" is just pretentious s**t, and Weezer is above that kind of song. Because Rivers Cuomo is showing off how easily he can write a brilliant pop song? I think some people (not directed at you) hold Weezer in too high regard. It makes sense that they would after their early brilliance but I don't think it's fair (kinda of like with Woody Allen). Make Believe is getting trashed by the cynics and Weezer fans for having retarded lyrics, when this is usually how Rivers writes. I cannot imagine Rivers Cuomo expressing himself in some clever wordplay and I really believe that he achieves a kind of poetry with his simplicity.

i think that "Beverly Hills" kinda has that "Sweater Song" sound which was before the band really broke through, the song isn't exactly really written birlliantly, but what do people expect? They have never really written stuff that was thoroughly brilliant, think "Buddy Holly" and "The Sweater Song" as examples.
As far as Beck is concerned, now there is an over-rated artists, and his songs are just an excuse to make money, especially when you think how much Rolling Stone seems to adore him.
Coldplay can get annoying if the song is heard too often, but that's what happens with most of their songs (IMO of course)
Foo Fighters haven't really dissapointed me with any of their songs, some take more time to grow into but i end up liking them, "Best Of You" is excellent.

They have never really written stuff that was thoroughly brilliant, think "Buddy Holly" and "The Sweater Song" as examples. I don't really know what Buddy Holly has that Beverly Hills doesn't. I think Beverly Hills has sort of an El Scorcho-like sound. Weezer never really was that smart anyway; look at the lyrics to Buddy Holly: As far as Beck is concerned, now there is an over-rated artists, and his songs are just an excuse to make money, especially when you think how much Rolling Stone seems to adore him. I've always found Beck VERY overrated. Especially since his songs come as default on Windows Media Player. Coldplay can get annoying if the song is heard too often, but that's what happens with most of their songs (IMO of course) I agree, Clocks was a great song but suffered overplay. I never really did like Yellow. Foo Fighters haven't really dissapointed me with any of their songs, some take more time to grow into but i end up liking them, "Best Of You" is excellent. All My Life took a long time to grow on me, but it's become one of my favourite Foo Fighters songs. Best of You is a nice enough song, but I'm trying to steer clear of it for a while so it doesn't get overplayed.

Just because you don't get someone's regard doesn't mean that they are there just to make money. Beck's an acquired taste, but I don't think I'd call him a sellout at all. I like the albums that effortlessly mix the several genres, although to me it's just decent when he did the Bob Dylan-type thing with Sea Change. There's a reason that most hipsters love Beck, and I have to agree with it. I'm not saying you have to like him, but I bet he'd be making the same stuff if the critics trashed him.

One listen all the way through, and Adore so called it, but Guero thoroughly bored me.
Still haven't even heard Coldplay's tune.

I get what you're saying here. Lyrically, Weezer has never had intricate, poetic songs. The thing about "Beverly Hills" that gets me is its subject matter and chord progression. The whole jaded "Hollywood is superficial" or "Hollywood sucks" and what have you has been covered more times that it needs to - and I don't think anyone needs to hear Weezer's take on it. On top of the mundane subject, the chord progression has a "nanny-nanny-bo-bo" effect on me. It's just so incredibly grating. Of the Weezer songs I've heard (not a lot, I'll admit), I haven't heard anything with such uninspired subject matter and annoying music arrangement. That combined with the questionable lyrics (imo, also not up to snuff with other Weezer songs, but that's debatable I guess), makes for a horrible song. Inevitably, my opinion doesn't mean much (since Beverly Hills is a hit nonetheless), but that's why I dislike this song so much.

LOL, Rivers Cuomo took a break after the Blue Album to attend Harvard. I think he knows exactly what he's trying to get across in his lyrics.
