I just posted this under the "Is WPLJ getting 'Jack'd"?" thread from All Access:
Yesterday, ALL ACCESS wondered aloud about how soon INFINITY would invite JACK to DA BIG APPLE! This morning Alternative WXRK (92.3 K-ROCK) syndicated morning man HOWARD STERN openly speculated that JACK-FM was coming to WXRK on JANUARY 1st, 2006.
WXRK VP/GM TOM CHIUSANO said, "No comment" but did engage in conversation with STERN about what the format was and who it was designed to appeal to. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like New York is about to get Jacked.

The "Jack" format sounds intriguing, but BOOOOO to the idea of WXRK switching.

K-Rock just changed a couple hours ago. They're now an Active Rock station playing lots of classic rock alongside the new.
New York has no Alternative.

Initially, I think I like the change because their staying true to the rock format, but I will still miss what K-Rock was. RIP Import/Export, The Buzz, Domestic Disturbance, etc. The jury is still out on K-Rock 2. They are alternative. They've been playing Kasabian, the Faint, MCR, The Shins, The Postal Service, etc. Good station, but I wish that were the terrestrial format.

I'm really upset about this...does this mean they will be taken off the Alternative panel? >:(

Why K-Rock Flipped April 04, 2005 By Paul Heine
Infinity programming prez Rob Barnett and WXRK New York OM Robert Cross explain the radical transformation at Howard Stern’s flagship station
Why did Infinity radically alter the format at WXRK (K-Rock) New York, relegating pure modern rock to a new Internet-only product and launching a new, wide-screen rock hybrid on the air?
“A big part of this decision was based on opening the aperture of the radio station,” Infinity president of programming Rob Barnett tells BillboardRadioMonitor.com. K-Rock, which is losing morning man Howard Stern to satellite radio at the end of the year, is now targeting “a little bit older and wider” audience, Barnett says.
To draw attention to its retooled sound, the station has given its airstaff (outside of Stern) a week off. They’re expected to return on Monday. “We don’t have any intention of going jockless,” Barnett adds.
Though it wasn’t entirely unhappy with K-Rock’s modern rock format, Infinity believed it could find “a better way to do it,” WXRK OM Robert Cross tells Monitor. “The problem I was having with alternative rock is that there is so much of it that is worthy of exposure that it was tough to get it on in the uncut, super-serving manner that early adopters are accustomed to having… It’s hard to give them that all the time,” while also playing Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and other bands that transformed rock in the early ‘90s.
“We were serving two masters,” Cross continues, “and this is a way for us to split it into two, and super-serve the new music needs on the Web and [satisfy] the people who just want the best rock of the last 15-20 years in one place” with the over-the-air station.
Barnett contends that the overhaul “makes the radio station a lot less repetitive and predictable and more fun to listen to, because we’re playing tons more music from all decades.” The station’s on-air library is “a growing, building thing,” Barnett adds.
The two programmers say K-Rock and its new cutting edge K-Rock 2 Internet sibling will cross-promote and interact. “There’s a lot of new energy that’s going to come off this thing,” Barnett promises. “You’re going to see a lot of fun coming off K-Rock 2.”
In transitioning to a wider, more mainstream rock format, WXRK joins Infinity sister WHFS Washington and Radio One’s WPLY Philadelphia in launching new Internet-only stations to serve their markets’ modern rock partisans. Clear Channel active rock WZTA Miami also recently made a similar move.
Cross sees a parallel between this trend and the modern rock format before the Grunge explosion, when alternative fans had to jump through hoops to seek out their music. Then it was on weak-signaled, often under-funded radio stations. Today it’s the Internet.
Barnett says the “positive reaction” to launching WHFS as a streamed product influenced their decision in New York. “When we started to talk about expanding the K-Rock playlist, we took a few minutes to talk about the kinds of things we could do to serve listeners. One idea was to go all new, all the time and give people a place to both listen to breaking stuff and feed back to [us] what’s good and what sucks.”
“It’s new music on new media, and the older stuff on older media,” Cross says
SCREW THAT. This is a death wish. This obviously a last ditch effort to save the station from flipping from rock altogether last year. Problem is, Q104.3 already plays most of the "classic tracks" they play. And they are going to lose the listeners who actually want to hear Alternative. I should be able to hear that ON THE RADIO, not online. Luckily, I still have G106.3.
It figures...just as KROCK started to get better, they ruin it.

Ehh, I'm not complaining. People complained that the station was too "Active-leaning" as it was, so maybe this move was all for the better. Plus "K-Rock 2" sounds interesting...I'm listening to it as we speak. However, does anybody think it might be an interesting idea to make K-Rock 2 an actual radio station on the 102.7 frequency? Certainly it couldn't get worse ratings than whatever's on there now, right?
And yeah, as CherryCrush said, I still have G106.3 to serve me when I want a middle ground between the two K-Rocks.

Yeah, this just sucks royally. At least with Active you get a good amount of currents. If I want to listen to Classic Rock, I'd turn to Q104.
But yeah, I seriously thought K-Rock was on its way to being the ideal (in my mind anyway) alternative station. They were opening up to more core alternative bands and bands that were a bit more left of center than usual. Hell, Modest Mouse had the #1 song of last year there and nobody in the world saw that coming. They were courting more obscure music and starting to be more trendsetting, so to speak. And now it's like they've gone right back to its pre-1996 days. :(
I'm sure I'll like K-Rock 2 (Geez, what a stupid name, I'm sorry). I'm just afraid it'll be too much like KNDD; so much attention toward the fact that they have to be "alternative" that they completely brush off stuff that might lean a little more mainstream. And that same stuff won't be "hard" enough to get played on K-Rock 1 and just gets left out in the cold completely. I hope I'm wrong, though.

I would say that so far, I don't think they are - they did play The Used. Correct me if I'm wrong but that does seem like the type of band that KNDD would shaft. Here's what I remember hearing so far (not in order): Keane - Everybody's Changing Mars Volta - Televators Garbage - Why Do You Love Me (grins at CherryCrush) Midtown - Give It Up The Used - The Taste Of Ink Dashboard Confessional - Hands Down The Shins - New Slang

Yeah, the weird thing about The Used is that, even though KNDD doesn't play them, they still promoted the Taste of Chaos Tour, and that was only because they were giving My Chemical Romance some moderate airplay.
But that looks OK, so far. I'm going to have to listen some time this week. I'm just going to miss it when I'm at my mom's house and I want to listen to the radio. I don't think her apartment is internet ready (nor does she have a computer for that matter).

Does anyone have the KRock Top 92.3 of 2001? I've got 02, 03, and 04 but haven't been able to track 01 down.

So does this mean that to get new rock songs, you have to listen to the internet? I can't listen to WFUV for six hours a day, and this format change sounds like what WNEW-FM did in the late 90's before they folded altogether.
K-Rock was good as it was -- why did they have to change to an almost all "resurrection lunch" format?

We'll have to wait to find out. According to 100000watts the format change happened on April 4. On April 25 the Winter ratings start being released. The month after that is the first trend of the Spring ratings and about three month after April 25 the final Spring ratings will be released. The Spring 2005 ratings period started on March 31 which is close to when the format change was.

I've got an idea...why not do what they did before, only the opposite?
Promote K-Rock II on K-Rock by putting at least an hour of K-Rock II music on say...Sunday night.
I think it would work out nicely. I don't listen to K-Rock II right now. I think for me to be motivated to listen to K-Rock II, that I'd have to listen to K-Rock to do it.

I don't know about K-Rock 2. I've heard some good stuff on there, but I always seem to hear a lot of the same songs, plus they seem to overdo it with the emo a bit.
And I actually kind of like the new K-Rock. I enjoy hearing some well-known classic rock tracks mixed in with the more modern stuff. Plus I'm hearing songs by the "old" K-Rock's core artists that they didn't seem to play much before (Alice In Chains' "Got Me Wrong" comes to mind).

They made $52 million in the last year...can anybody tell me why I have not seen one damn TV advertisement for it here?
I don't care what the situation with Howard is...it feels like they wasted an opportunity by reaching out to people in the area.
