This was most common in late 1999-2000 on my chart, since I expanded to top 100, it rarely happens anymore.

Although I don't have the exact chart run...on my chart last year "Hero" by Chad Kroeger & Josey Scott debut at #17 (out of 30) and only made it to around #5 i'm gonna say...although I'm not sure...i know it didnt hit #1

The highest debut in the history of my chart, "Hands Clean" by Alanis Morissette, debuted at #16 only to peak at #3. In my opinion, there's no way that should have debuted so high, but I'll live with the #3 peak.

Staind's "For You" debuted at #4 in late 2001 but only peaked at #2, kept out by Puddle of Mudd's "Blurry" (which spent a then-record 6 weeks at #1).

Hmmm, good question. I think the Philosopher Kings entered at #41 on my Top 100 and peaked at #40 with 'Supersexworld'.

Eminem's 'Stan' went 68-4 and peaked at #4 for four weeks. So that's probably the Top 40 record.

In 1999 & 2000, I allowed Christmas songs to chart on my personal chart (now I make a separate Holiday chart). Then, the record would be for Christina Aguilera's "The Christmas Song", which debuted at #12 and peaked at #2. (This was when I had a top 20 chart).

For non-holiday songs,this record is held by *N Sync's "Pop", which debuted at #17 or #18, but only peaked at #3. (This is when the chart was a top 30).

Y'know, I was sifting through this forum's archives and I looked in this thread, but decided not to dig it up. But seeing as how someone else has done it for me ;)...

It's a tie:

Britney Spears Featuring Pharrell, "Boys (Co-Ed Remix)". That debuted at #10 on 7/27/02, but only peaked at #6.

Daniel Bedingfield, "If You're Not the One". That debuted at #10 on 4/27/03, but only peaked at #5.

Funny how all of these high debuts didn't even hit #1.

Anyway, for me it's #2.

TLC's "Damaged" debued at #2, but never quite got the top spot. It spent most of it's chart run fighting it's way inside the top 5.

Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" also debued at #2 on my chart. It managed to spend a week at the top, but then began it's slow descend down that chart.

There were one or two other songs which debued at #2, but I can't think of them. :)

This wasn't an actual single though, it's the only album track I ever allowed to chart because we played it so many times over the summer that most of my friends assumed it was a single anyway, so I let it chart for accuracy of what I was hearing the most at that time, if that makes sense.

I've had two songs debut at #10.

The first was Nicki Minaj's "Starships." The other was Florence + the Machine's "Shake It Out." However, it must be pointed out that "Shake It Out"'s debut was on the chart's tenth week when I changed the formula for the point system, making it easier for songs to make it onto the chart. There's no doubt in my mind "Shake It Out" would have debuted at a lower position a week or two sooner. Also, "Starships"'s debut was during the first formula. If I was using the new method, it also would have debuted the week prior at a lower number.
