Surely each year gives a fresh face a rising star to fame. This year, the most successful freshmen (and freshwomen) would include Ashlee Simpson, Maroon 5 and Los Lonely Boys to cite just a few.
But also we can expect a veteran artist to stand the tests of time and almost stand out, possibly stronger than ever before each year.
Which veteran artist do you believe has come out the strongest in 2004? (Artists if you can't pick just once)
Consider the following:
* Improvement (greater album sales in comparison to predecessor, more airplay, etc.) * Reviews * Overall appeal
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

My Veteran Artist of 2004 pick would have to be Green Day.
Green Day have improved on all levels since "Warning" with "American Idiot". "American Idiot" has earned universal acclaim from critics, has already outpaced predecessor "Warning" in sales, and the title track was able to do what no single from Green Day could do before; chart the Billboard Hot 100. They already have one #1 from the record with the title track and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is about to make it a pair of chart-toppers for Green Day from the record (if not this week, definitely next week)
But the level of success for this record and Green Day goes far beyond its commerical merits. This has set up the perfect bridge into their second decade as a band, and walking into Decade II as a band, they have earned a newly found respect among Alternative listeners everywhere and may have earned immortality to the format. If not that, the band has unquestionably matured a long way and have found a great voice, beyond the early era of masturbation and basket cases which made "Dookie" a success.
Plus, with the possible movie concept idea surfacing for the record, this could very well immortalize the record into a cult classic.
If you are Green Day, this is not just a great year, it's a glorious holiday.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Well, I have to say Duran Duran with their "Astronaut" CD.
The album may not be high on the charts or anything, but they came back with a strong album. Their last few were not strong, and they did horribly on the charts.
"Astronaut" debuted at #17, which was a HUGE improvement for them.

I'm very proud of all my R&B veterans who had big comebacks like Anita Baker, Teena Marie, Patti LaBelle, and most impressively Prince!

Given his album sales, and most impressively, his touring success, I would have to say definitely Prince.

Given his album sales, and most impressively, his touring success, I would have to say definitely Prince. Prince was also one of five I was thinking over. "Musicology" has been selling very strongly, despite the lack of a hit single. It's slid off the Top 100 portion of the Billboard 200 now, but has went double-platinum, which I'd consider a promising comeback. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

My vote goes to Seal. He came back with a solid effort that deserved to be a bigger hit.

LL Cool J is doing OK right now with "Hush." It's the first time he's had a Top 40 hit as the lead credit since "Around the Way Girl" in 1991.
Janet didn't do so well this year.

My vote goes to Seal. He came back with a solid effort that deserved to be a bigger hit. Seal came back pretty strong, though I'd consider him a Veteran success of 2003 ("Seal IV" was released last year and went platinum) Though, with "Love's Divine" still holding up strong at AC radio, I can see what you mean. Definetly Prince. He came out strong with his new CD. Honorable mention will have to be Patti LaBelle

I have to give this distinction to Green Day.
As I said before, not since the Red Hot Chili Peppers has there been a veteran band that's exploded with something so meaningful.
American Idiot is an album that NO ONE other than Green Day could have written, and it was written so well.
Critics like it, fans like it. People who just listen to music and couldn't really give a crap who the artist are love it.
Green Day are about to have 2 #1 singles from this album probably as of next week. They've never done that before on one album since Dooke (with When I Come Around and Basket Case).
I can't think of a veteran band who's had this much momentum and so much love given back to them as Green Day have.
Hell, even with 5 alternative #1s, I don't even believe Linkin Park can achive the admiration and following the Green Day has and will continue to have for years to come.
So yeah, for 2004, I give it to Green Day.

2005 might go to Green Day as well or U2.

My pick has to be Tim McGraw. Ten years after breaking out, he scores the biggest hit of his career in "Live Like You Were Dying", which is also on the verge of going Top 10 on the AC chart. He scored the biggest week of album sales in his career, and a #1 Pop smash in "Over & Over". Plus, his new album is being praised by many critics as his best album yet.
Snoop Dogg is another contender, on the way to scoring the biggest hit single of his career.
I think if U2 gets the 1,000,000 sales that some think they may, they have to be considered. They are still one of the most relevant bands in the world, charting on many formats. They get as much love from the critics as they ever have.

They are still one of the most relevant bands in the world, charting on many formats. They get as much love from the critics as they ever have. Tim McGraw is definitely stronger than ever. Not only did "Live Like You Were Dying" become his strongest career chart-topping single on Country, he now has a #1 CHR/Pop single shared in credit with Nelly. He crossed my mind, though I didn't pick him because I felt he has been consistently successful and has consistently topped the singles chart time and time again like he did off his last record "Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors". So Tim McGraw improved a great deal, but when comparing to Green Day, who seemed to be slowly fading away after "Warning" and might have been remembered as a band that wrote catchy singles yet never really wove a long-term masterpiece, but then have suddenly found a creative and enthralling voice off "American Idiot" that's given this band a whole new life, I felt I had to give it to them. Snoop Dogg and U2 are both coming back strong, though I felt U2 was very strong off "All That You Can't Leave Behind", taking home multiple Grammys, selling four million records domestically, scoring multiple hit singles, etc. and I feel we'll have to see in 2005 if U2 can match up to its success, otherwise you may not call it an improvement so much as just another successful, strong effort. As for Snoop Dogg, he's in a great position. "Drop It Like Its Hot" looks like it could be his biggest career hit yet, and he just might pull an Usher in the process and rise back as a single staple. Again, we'll have to wait until next year to see if this happens. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

International-The Cure Every song from their latest album has peaked high on the UK Charts. #25 and #39 on the UK charts isn't much of a comeback. It was better than the singles from Bloodflowers did, but it certainly wasn't a huge comeback. How did the album sell?

to be different, im gonna say juvenile. he had a hot 100 topper with 'slow motion', his biggest single since 'back that azz up', plus the other 2 singles of the album went hot 100 top 50. it'z taken him 9 years to get into the pop charts, so id have to give it to him. snoop, tim mcgraw & green day close behind.

I mentioned Duran Duran earlier, but I would also like to add Teena Marie as a very close 2nd.

#25 and #39 on the UK charts isn't much of a comeback. LOL. There's one letter and there's one number for my answer. They're about to explode and they'll definitely take this title by year's end.

I'd add Reba McEntire to the list. Nearly 30 years into her career, she hits #1 with "Somebody" which becomes her biggest hit in close to 10 years.

R.Kelly
-He's bounced back from numerous cases, and somehow still found time to collaborate with Jay-Z, release a double album and be on just about every rapper's album, with each song being a guaranteed hot jam.-

-Prince would have to be #1 -Green Day has always done well but I agree that this year was like Dookie Part 2 -The Pixies & The Cure came back on the tour scene and did remarkably well -Loretta Lynn -Brian Wilson -Beastie Boys didn't do as well with the new album as Hello Nasty did but having a number album can never be bad. Same case with Jimmy Buffett.

Same case with Jimmy Buffett. American Idiot is NOT Dookie Pt. 2. I believe that I can definitely say that while Dookie is a classic that has stood the test of time. American Idiot is an extremely different album that's important in a totally different way. As for the Beastie Boys, Ch-Check It Out was their first #1 at alternative. So yeah, they had a pretty damn good year.
