I'm not really sure which forum this thread belongs in, but, since, in a way, it's a matter of opinion, I decided to post it in this forum.
Anyway, in the "Breakfast At Tiffany's" topic, several people mentioned how overplayed that song was and that got me to thinking, what about other overplayed songs of the 1990s? Here is a list of songs that I can think of off the top of my head that were overplayed to the point that, some five to ten years later, I'm still burned out on them. I'm sure, as time goes on, I'll think up more.
I Love You Always Forever/Donna Lewis Breakfast At Tiffany's/Deep Blue Something Fantasy/Mariah Carey Come To My Window/Melissa Etheridge I Don't Want To Miss A Thing/Aerosmith I Will Always Love You/Whitney Houston Just Another Day/Jon Secada Another Night/Real McCoy Run-Around/Blues Traveler
That's about all I can think of right now, but I'm sure I'll come up with many more.

The "Macarena" was really never overplayed though. It only peaked at #10 and it dropped off the face of the Earth after it left the top 40. I'll be the first to say that given how much of a fad it was, it probably should have gotten MORE airplay. Put in a vote for any movie ballad for me: "My Heart Will Go On", "I Will Always Love You", and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" all stuck around way longer than they should have.

So you don't watch TV and/or attend sporting events? I'd go so far as to say the Macarena was the MOST overplayed song of the 90's. Every TV show, commercial, baseball game, whatever, played the song nonstop. It's one of those cases where the song was way more popular than the radio play, and it was way overplayed.

No, that's actually what I was saying. It should have been played on the radio more, because it was such a huge fad. I thought we were talking exclusively about radio play here, since all of ulj's songs were overplayed radio hits. If you include ballgames, TV, and other media, then I definitely agree the Macarena is overplayed.

The Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" and "Slide", which are still frequently played across the formats as recurrents, were among the most overplayed rock tracks of the 1990's (and I still am not bored of them, they're that good! :) ).
"Mr. Jones" remains a staple for Counting Crows.
Sugar Ray's "Fly", "Every Morning" and "Someday" were played to the bone and remain powerhouse recurrents. (unlike the Goos, these songs are irritating to hear over and over now to me!)
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Run-Around/Blues Traveler Holy crap, yes! I was a little kid when this came out and I still heard it all the time. "What It's Like" by Everlast got extremely overplayed on my Hot AC stations.

"My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion comes to mind. And unlike the Goos, Sugar Ray, Santana, etc., this song is never heard on my radio station. Is it getting any recurrent play at all??
Just heard Mr. Jones & Smooth today. Love them both.

"Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind was played to death during the fall/winter 1997.

Pick any one of the singles off of Hootie and the Blowfish's first album. Those songs were so played to death that even people who liked the songs (like myself) were sick of the group. I think it really hurt their subsequent albums and career.
Maroon 5 is fast approaching the "so sick of hearing them" phase with me. They really need to cut back on trying to be on every soundtrack, etc.

Just Another Day/Jon Secada I've never heard this song. I didn't start listening to Pop radio until 1999, so really, there's nothing I'd list here.

I think it really hurt their subsequent albums and career. Well, releasing the lead single off your sophomore album - an album that sounds exactly the same as your debut album - while the last single from the debut is still charting will hurt, too. See, this is one thing Atlantic tried to do right. They wanted the band to wait about 6 months before releasing the sophomore album, but the band wouldn't listen, so they got what they deserved.

"Missing" by Everything But the Girl... man they needed to give that song a rest. I'd never get sick of that one. One of my favorites from 1996. Seal - Kiss From a Rose Dionne Farris - I Know Ditto (but these are from 1995).

OMC, How Bizarre
A number of those mentioned above I would argue aren't overplayed because they truly deserve that much airplay.
