Recently the RIAA released a list of the first group of single certifications based on internet downloads.
OutKast's "Hey Ya," "The Way You Move," and "Roses" have all been certified Platinum. Hoobastank's "The Reason," D12's "My Band," and Maroon 5's "This Love" have also been certified Platinum.
Gold certifications went to Coldplay's "Clocks," The Darkness's "I Believe In A Thing Called Love," Sheryl Crow's "The First Cut Is The Deepest," and Britney Spears's "Toxic".
Billboard will begin factoring in internet sales completely starting in the spring of 2005. I think this is an exciting new age for the singles market and I'm happy to see it revived.

I can't wait, although it might not make a big difference since alot of the most downloaded songs are rnb/hiphop.

I can't wait, although it might not make a big difference since alot of the most downloaded songs are rnb/hiphop. I think the average top selling single over the last 6months should be set = to the 100 million in airplay as far as chart points go. That way the chart stays current and you have a balanced chart at all times.... So next week they will avg the previous 6mo at #1 together again... on a rolling basis... that way the avg stays current.

Urban/Rhythmic is simply a more popular format right now. However, it's good to know that the buying public will once again have an effect on the singles charts.

Josh,
What do you think of my suggestion as far as the billboard singles sales charts go?
I am curious because that's the only way its going to make sales really matter and take some of the power of radio away. There should always be a way to get a hit without radio involvment and that should be sales... because sales is ultimately why there is a record industry.

I think some people expect too much from single sales being factored in. People are still going to buy what's popular at the moment. It's not like we should be expecting #1 debuts from Rod Stewart or anything.

Kelly Clarkson is #1 on Hot Digital Tracks with "Since You've Been Gone" selling over 20K. She'd surely benefit on the real chart, and could be as high as Top 30.

"Toxic" should be platinum, so should "Pieces Of Me" and "Are You Gonna Be My Girl"
