Punk used to actually mean something, and goth and emo may have at some point too, but thanks to MTV and Hot Topic, these have just become pointless labels.

Emo I consider light rock. There are too many branches of music for rock. Yet people classify Sheryl Crow and Britney Spears both as pop when their music is clearly different.

Emo is pretty much an insult these days. It's usually used to make fun of guys who only listen to really whiny bands with high-pitched lead singers. Green Day is definitely NOT emo. I don't think any band wants to be considered emo.
Punk is a label that's often misused, but there are still "real" punk bands out there, and I think Green Day does fit into this genre. Bad Religion is another band that definitely fits the punk label.
Goth is a darker subculture that's way out of the mainstream. I can't think of a single popular band that would be classified as goth. H.I.M., maybe, but they're not very popular. Evanescence is not goth.
They are kind of pointless labels, but the last two still hold some weight.

Goth is the dark either direct Satan worship or close to it type of music. I think Goth is one of the easiest categories to determine, but there are plenty of bands that try to look goth that aren't goth bands. Punk was never a very easy category to place bands in. It was supposed to be about angst against the system, a F@ k everyone and everything kind of mentality, and they just didn't care. The problem is that how does a commercially successful band truly entertain themselves as Punk? Music critics fall all over themselves with this one too. In my opinion the music and lyrics of Punk are a fight the establishment type, and is a far more broad category than most will agree on. I put Green Day in as punk. EMO I've never heard of, I don't know what it stands for.

I always thought EMO was for the light-punk, just like Dashboard Confessional, Someting Corporate, Jimmy Eat World...

Emo is a pointless label and no one knows how that came about really.
Apparently it means Emotional (hence whiny voices with bleeding hearts in anthemic songs).
As for goth, Hot Topic killed that. As for H.I.M. not being popular. H.I.M. is HUGE in Europe, and has a very dedicated following in the U.S. They just haven't sold an assload of albums or broken through to radio yet, though that may change in 05.
If you wanted to labal Jimmy Eat World anything, I'd label them Indie, in the respect that they feel that they don't need a major label to get what they need accomplished. They never really have.
The point is though that labels are stupid and kill music.

I saw a book in a bookstore abou the rise of so-called "emo" music, highlighting how the term came to be and various bands tagged with the label (there are chapters on Jimmy Eat World and the Long Island music scene). It looked very insightful, but I didn't get it. I can't even remember what it's called now.

Well, I was strictly talking about US popularity. They're not a household name, even among Alternative listeners. How about "power pop"? Jimmy Eat World has always been about good melodies, backed by hard guitars. That would lump them in with Weezer and Phantom Planet, not a bad place to be.
