Since it's Sunday I thought it might be the appropriate time to bring up a genre of music that was seldom commented on at the old R&R boards. There isn't much gospel that I've ever cared much for, but there is one particular exception: The Edwin Hawkins Singers' Oh Happy Day.
A rousing, foot-stomping and hand-clapping ditty par excellence. There've been other versions of this song since (the best of the covers is probably the one by Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples recorded live) but the original is still the best. Oddly enough, the lead singer on OHP was not a regular member of the EHS. Her name was Dorothy Combs Morrison, and to my knowledge she never duplicated the success of this unusual 1968 pop and r&b hit (neither did the EHS, for that matter).
There've been a few other gospel songs I've heard and liked but not many. One notable group with some truly great music is The Mighty Clouds of Joy.
I've never heard a white gospel song I've liked, but I do like Judy Collins version of Amazing Grace.

The version I have of "Oh Happy Day" is with none other than Mahalia Jackson! It's great.
