What should they have done differently with Paula's "Head Over Heels" album?
Personally I thought "My Love Is For Real" was an excellent lead single, and I liked "Crazy Cool" also.
But what did it need? More promotion? Better songs? Different lead single?

"my love is for real" was a hot song and in my opinion it was a take on Janet's '93 hit "if." I dont realy know what happened with this album i was young and wasnt into Paula and i didnt get this album until last year. So i really can not comment on her promotion. The only thing i can think of is that in 1995 r&b was really popular androck was really popular. Not many artists fit in the middle where Paula was. Paula was alway a pop artist but she had a decent sized crossover audience at her peak (nothing comparable to janets audience though) and I think maybe with a more mature r&b/pop vibe that maybe some1 like Dallas Austin could have given her who was red hot at the time (who also worked with Madonna around that time) I think she could have had a chance at a more successful album.
I must say that her album really was pretty good and btter than "spellbound" as an over all album but the singles were just stronger from "spellbound" and that is what sells an album.

it was just inappropriate for the time. sadly i must agree with bluenote--- rock and R&B were popular. look at the kidn of R&B that was out: mary and faith who had a similar style, and then brandy, aaliyah, and monica---- all very different thatn paula. she (paula) was stuck in the past.

lol majority of everything on the top 50 is either really r&b or rock. Madonna even got Babyface, a r&b producer to work withher for "take a bow" I guess she even took the hint she needed a more r&b sound.

I fail to see how it doesn't fit into R&B stylings. Dallas Austin also did a song or two on the album.

Dallas Austin also did a song or two on the album. it had the middle eastern influences...it was still very pop IMO. But i do feel some of the other more r&b tracks would have done better on the album. "the choice is yours" comes to mind. i think Maybe Dallas produced that one, i'm not sure. But it sounds VERY TLCish.

Are there any Middle Eastern sounding songs that have done well on the charts?
I'm just thinking of "My Love Is For Real" and Mandy Moore's "In My Pocket" - these are 2 of my favourite songs ever, they are really fantastic.... yet they didn't do very well.

Also that song by Truth. and also "dip it low"

I didnt say Scot produced "dip it low" i said his songs have a middle eastern theme to them and the song by Truth "addictive" and "dip it low" are 2 other songs that did well with the middle eastern vibe. I have Milians album, Scot didnt produce "dip it low."

The eighties were the era of decadences and triviality…Paula represented that dance pop image that people were sick of. People were either looking towards the anti power rock of garage grunge bands, or to rnb which was thriving. “My love is for real” should have sold that album but the promotion necessary to fight her 80’s image wasn’t there. :'( It was such a hot video too.

"Dip It Low" has an asian sound, not a middle eastern one!

I think the album was a bit before its time. I think it would have done better if released now.

I think the single choices killed it. "My Love Is For Real" and "Crazy Cool" are not among the best songs on the album. My fave is "Under The Influence". Even "I Never Knew It" or "Missing You" could have done better than MLIFR.

I think "ho down" would have been a good 1st single. It was dancable, which is what she was known for. "if i was your girl" should have been 2nd single. "sexy thoughts" for the 3rd single (this song is HOT!) "crazy cool" for the 4th single.

Even "I Never Knew It" or "Missing You" could have done better than MLIFR. "Never knew it" and "Missing you" are good songs too. "never knew it" is really good probably 3rd single material. "missing u" and "if i were your girl" were toss up for 2nd single IMO but i would have chose IIWYG. I think this album had soooooooooooo many possibilities. a combination of the failure was probably the 1st single and just a overall lack ofi nterest in Paula at the moment. But that could have been changed if Virgin hadnt given up on her and let her release another album instead of just deciding to be thankful for the previous success and dump her. I think overall this is her best album. The singles from her other 2 albums were stronger BUT this album had potential strong singles that never saw the light of day and could have also been as storng as previous singles but the album as a whole is her strongest IMO.

I personally liked Paula Abdul's "Head Over Heels" album. I think people were not ready for "My Love Is For Real." "Crazy Cool" might have been a better first single. Then "My Love Is For Real" as a second single would have been better. Both songs were really good.

I hated My Love Is For Real when it came out. I'd have to listen to it again now... but Paula's album wasn't promoted correctly.

I think I would have released it:
1. Crazy Cool (single remix version) 2. If I Were Your Girl 3. Ho-Down 4. My Love Is For Real
Then a 5th single reuniting her with that damn animated cat with "Crazy Love"? ahaha ;)
