I was talking with an alternative music fan and he said that some singers voices are too good for alternative. :o He specifically mentioned Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 as an example. What do you think of this?

No, matchbox twenty is just too pop-friendly for Alternative.

A good voice never hurts an alternative band, but it obviously isn't a necessary element either.
I think a person can sing "too pure" for alternative if that makes any sense.

I don't think Rob Thomas has a really good voice anyway.

Rob Thomas doesn't have the best voice in music today, but his voice holds up live. There aren't too many singers out today that can reproduce a song on stage that sounds better than the studio version. He would be well served to get a different producer on his solo project, because Matt Serletic layers too much sound over his vocals and you can't really tell that he has a good (not great) voice.
