Saw the list of best guitarists in Rolling Stone recently. Question: Are there certain things to look for when judging how good a guitarist someone is. Is it just musical ability or does "flair" come into it. I can tell when someone is a bad guitarist, but can't really say when someone is a great one. What should I be looking for? I guess the same thing for drummer. I hear people comment on different musicians as being great, but need some help identifying how to come to this conclusion myself. Any help?

Two words.....Eddie VanHalen.
I think there are very few superstar guitarists today where in the 80's there was Eddie, Steve Vai, Joe Stariani. Even guys like Cece Deville, Neil Schon and Richie Sambora had something that nobody else has today. In the 70's there was Clapton, Page, Jeff Beck, Fand others. They all had talent, played great solos, and yes, had that flair. There were great musicians, who coud play fast and write great hooks. Now we have a bunch of stiffs who just jam.

what about G'N'R's Slash? ;) Agreed. Slash wrote some of the most memorable riffs and solos ever. Justin

Sorry, I can't help you with your question. But I have to say that the best guitarist is definitely Kaci. She can really tear up a stage with her acoustic version of "Just An Old Boyfriend" and "The Beauty Of Goodbye"!

I'd say probably either Carlos Santana or Eric Clapton.
