It person. In the early/mid 90's it was pretty routine to have more than one IT person.

Word.
It does seem like there's always one artist that hogs a majority of the spotlight, making it really hard for others to break through. I don't blame those artists, though - it's just unfortunate that there isn't enough room for plenty of talented artists.
In the early 90's, it wasn't just one person selling 6-7 million albums. There were a handfull of acts scoring multiple #1 singles, awards and other achievements.
Times have changed, though, and I guess I'm used to it.

I guess you're right. But there have been quite a few "it" people this year.

But Mariah Carey was the "it" person for the entire 90's. :) And the reason is she sings so damn well.

But there have been quite a few "it" people this year. Yeah, 2004 saw IMO 3 artists who were "It" throughout the year, and at any given time of the year there were even more ThroughoutUsher Maroon 5 Alicia Keys Winter/SpringKanye West Jessica Simpson SummerKanye West Ashlee Simpson *Maybe even Franz Ferdinand/The Killers/Modest Mouse FallGreen Day It does seem though that few artists are able to have a string of big hits from the same album.

I think having "it" means reaching not only across many formats but beyond the music field. It happens when you create buzz in whatever you do.
I think Usher was the only artist to truly have "it" this year. Tim McGraw may be second in noteriety for having an NBC special and a pop hit. Ashlee Simpson was close and may have had "it" where it not for SNL, and Green Day seems to be approaching it.
Maroon 5 had many big hits but the regular radio listener could not pick Adam Levine out of a crowd. I just don't think people really care about them, they just like their songs. Same goes with Kanye West. outside of rhythmic & urban radio, nobody really knows him.
I think U2 & Eminem still are pretty important artists, but are not as important as they were a few years ago.

IMO, Usher was the "IT" person this year. That's it. lol.
Yeah, other people had great success, but nobody even came half as close to Usher. He definitely dominated and didn't share the wealth with any male or female artists out.
Alicia had an outstanding year, Kanye was hot, Maroon 5 kicked ass, Ashlee Simpson sold well, but the "IT" label belonged to Usher and Usher alone.
Between 1989 and 1990, you had Janet Jackson, MC Hammer, Mariah Carey, Wilson Phillips, Madonna and Paula Abdul all owning a respective spot in a competitive year. They ALL managed to dominate and there was still enough room for others to top the charts. I just don't think anyone else other than Usher had a year like those artists.
It wasn't like that in 2004, and it hasn't been like that in a long time. This is just one lady's opinion, though. :)

I don't agree with Alicia. It doesn't seem like she's been exposed enoguh to be the "it" person.

But Mariah Carey was the "it" person for the entire 90's. :) yes she was another "it" person but she was much different form Janet and Madonna. Mariah lacked the flare and pure entertainment pleasure of those 2. When most people think of classic 90's videos that shaped and changed music, Madonna and Janet come to mind. They are just different artists so i didnt mention Mariah with them. :)

That's why she was the biggest selling, biggest hit producing artist of the entire 90's AND she wrote all her own songs. Imagine that!

Mariah was a bore that stuffed shirt conservatives enjoyed to listen to and they bought her albums. which is the reason why once she turned hip hop she stopped selling records. She wasnt/isnt a visual artist by any means.

She wasnt/isnt a visual artist by any means. So Janet's a visual artist and can't write, produce, or sing for s**t. I don't get your point. Mariah can't dance so that makes her less of an artist? Oh please. Bob Dylan was never much of an artist because he couldn't shake his rump properly. Goodness. ...and you must be one of the stuffed shirt conservaties because you're charting her leaked non-single on your personal chart. Stop with this nonsense "Mariah sucks" random rants just to annoy me, because you like her and I can see right through it.

Bob Dylan was never much of an artist because he couldn't shake his rump properly. Goodness. last time i checked Janet wrote, co-produced majority of everything she sings. and her vocal ability is a matter o fopinion. And from the sounds of Mariahs last few records Mariah hasnt shown an inch more vocal ability than Janet. Maybe if Mariah had a co-writer or 2 she wouldnt sing fluff. And i didnt say because Mariah isnt a visual artist it makes her less of a artist, i said she had no flare and no entertainment value what so ever.

Yet you listen to her and chart her latest material which you consider crap. Who's the one with multiple personalities now? Please.

Please. i dont have a problem with Mariah carey, i simply bought out the fact that in the 90's Janet and Madonna were very entertaining, innovative and have some of the most memerable videos from the era and Mariah was simply a good singer with a manufactured persona but of course u took offense because u happen to like Mariah this week sense she sung a song to your liking. and i think it was a well known fact i liked "say something" from 1st listen and yes its on my personal chart, get your personalities and memories in tact.

Take your own words to heart.. Obviously it's a minority matter of opinion too considering Mariah had way more success than both of them in the 90's. ...and I always liked Mariah's 90's material so I don't know what this "You like Mariah this week" crap is. I've always like Mariah's 90's material and if someone wants to decredit her success, then I will surely stand behind the facts.

if that was directed towards me, try again. Because you're good at keeping your cool. 90% of the time I say something that you disagree with, you throw some "MARIAH SHOULD REALLY TAKE SOME ADVICE FROM HER" garbage at me. "EVEN MARIAH CAREY COULDN'T DO THIS WELL". Take your own advice.

She released six studio albums in the 90's... and scored #1 hits and atleast triple platinum status with every single one. The fact that she could release albums so frequently and not burn out from overexposure is even more impressive.

Mariah was getting a couple of singles off of every album.

Janet could release one album and it would last for 6 singles. Mariah was getting a couple of singles off of every album. So what's your point? Look at Mariah's debut album. All four singles went to #1 and then she just went on to the next album. She didn't even bother with a fifth single despite the fact that radio was already picking favorites. Atleast she wasn't tacking bonus tracks on re-releases to score extra #1's like some artists today.
