I love when Christina does it. Perfect! And I loved Kelly's note as well. I remember everyone taking notice after that-not that they didnt before, but it really showed more range and versatility than before :)

what about Toni, at the end of "Maybe"? That's just her head voice. Those notes are a good octave lower than the "shrieks".

Shanice Does it Flawlessly. its actually stronger than Mariahs. Really, what songs. I've heard a few songs where she whistles and it sounds forced and not stronger than Mariah's.

How low is the lowest note. If I'm understanding this right, Mariah has the greatest range because she can go really low and really high, right?

Mariah is A2 - G7 Octave One: C1 D1 E1 F1 G1 A1 B1 Octave Two: C2 D2 E2 F2 G2 A2 B2 Octave Three: C3 D3 E3 F3 G3 A3 B3 Octave Four: C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4 B4 Octave Five: C5 D5 E5 F5 G5 A5 B5 Octave Six: C6 D6 E6 F6 G6 A6 B6 Octave Seven: C7 D7 E7 F7 G7 A7 B7That range really is insane... of course the higher notes are in the whistle register, I'm not sure where she goes to on head voice

well, these best thing about mariah's shriek is her ability control the note with such ease..... charmbracelet is a great example of just how great she can play with the high note.......
i also love how she can easily enter it and exit it in the same breath!!! damn!!!!!!

Kandi of Xscape. Her "shriek" in "my little secret" is GREAT!

I don't like Mariah's take on the "Betty Wright-shriek" Mariah always annoys me when she does it. She throws it at the most unnecassary times.
Betty Wright kicks ass on the shriek. Remember her on Making The Band II?

I dont like those wannabe mariah carey shriek's. They all sound horrible because its sounds like they are trying stealing one of mariah's trademarks. Yes, nothing is quite like the original. I still feel this way today.

I still feel this way today. Yes, but people did "shrieks" before Mariah. Minnie Ripperton and Yma Sumac are examples. Plus I love when X-tina does it.

In terms of whiste registers, I've always thought that the only 2 females that do it any justice are Mariah and Minnie. Their tones, control, and vibratto in that register are absolutely flawless!

Tha Mariah 'Shriek' really bugs me. The only song she's done where I think it fits is 'Fantasy'. It really works for that song. Otherwise, it's a major factor in my dislike of her. In my opinion she does bland songs and thinks they can be lifted just by adding a few of her dog-whistle vocal aerobics into the mix. Amen!

What you fail to realize is that it's an actual "note" - it exists, and not, and by that, I mean, VERY FEW, people can actually hit it......... throwing it into a bland song SHOULD make the song better, because well, that is a VERY difficult note to hit......
You don't go to a class to learn that....you can't get surgery to be able to hit that.....you either you have it or you don't........
It may sound like a "shreik" - but that's because you're not used to hearing it - it's almost impossible to hit....

I can easily hit what some call the "shriek" (actually the whistle register, they are whistle notes) easily/ naturally [without any strainage and I am able to control it, so that I don't sound like a psycho, lol], and sing words in the 6th octave too.

i see just about all the hight note whistlers you all have mention but you have forgot if you or anyone knows there is a jazz/rb singer by the name of Rachelle ferrell that has an octave range of 6.5 from the lowest base note to the highest of the sirens. check her out and can sing effortless in the whistle range.

Kelly's note she hit on Natural Woman was flawless. She's never done it again, right?

Kelly Clarkson, Shanice, and Debelah Morgan are some more artists that I know who can do it. Kelly Clarkson's is a lot weaker though. Chante Moore, Deniece Williams also.

I think Kelly did do it once on AI, but I don't think she has done it again...like as if it doesn't come so naturally/ easily to her, or maybe she doesn't do it as well...as strong, I don't know. Anyways, lol...Like for example Mariah when she sings notes in the 6th octave simply as if she's just casually talking...(listen to "Bliss" and you'll see what I'm talking about, and in some interviews if they ask her to hit a high note (whistle note) and low note, she'll do it...no sweat. JMHO, I don't really know the whole story...

What about Jessica Simpson in "Your Faith In Me" off of the Sweet Kisses album. I don't know much about octaves and notes, but whatever she's hitting there is dang high and whistly!
