Do you like it when female artists shriek like Mariah Carey in their songs?
For example, Angela Via holds the note on "mineeeeeeeeeee!" toward the end of "Picture Perfect." I forgot for how long, but fans timed it and it was like 30 seconds or something!
Similarly, Kiley Dean throws one in during the bridge of "Who Will I Run To?," holding the note on "Oh baby can it beeeeeee."
It definitely blows you away!

if only the shrieks were actually somewhat tolerable, most of them are obnoxious and totally out of place.. i think the one song where the shriek which isn't really a part of the song that makes me cringe the most is Mariah's "Heartbreaker" honestly, that part just makes me cringe every time i hear it

I f*c*i* love the "Mariah shriek". I am always impressed with the ability to hit high notes for an extended period. I don't think I have heard a Mariah song I haven't liked. Xtina tries to match Mariah's vocal talent and she does a very good job. But nothing quite touches the real thing.

30 seconds..? um.... lmao. :o sure sure.
it can be good if it's not over-used (christina does that sometimes) and if they're actually good at it. i like mary's version better though, where it's an "oooo" sound, and lots of other R&B vocalists do it more like that. but yeah it's a good thing.

I dont like those wannabe mariah carey shriek's. They all sound horrible because its sounds like they are trying stealing one of mariah's trademarks. Yes, nothing is quite like the original.

Kelly Clarkson, Shanice, and Debelah Morgan are some more artists that I know who can do it. Kelly Clarkson's is a lot weaker though.

I remember Debelah Morgans live performance of "Dance With Me" on a TV show here. She pretty much shrieked her way though the end of it. Yeah it shows she could sing, but it sounded horrible.
Tha Mariah 'Shriek' really bugs me. The only song she's done where I think it fits is 'Fantasy'. It really works for that song. Otherwise, it's a major factor in my dislike of her. In my opinion she does bland songs and thinks they can be lifted just by adding a few of her dog-whistle vocal aerobics into the mix.
The best use of the 'shriek' for me is that song "How Can I Ease The Pain?" by Lisa Fischer. It totally works for the song, cos she doesn't overdo it or understate it either. She gets it exactly right and it packs a hell of a punch.

Where does Kelly do it? I've never heard it.
Minnie Riperton could do it.
BTW, I love the 'Mariah Shriek".

Where does Kelly do it? I've never heard it. When Kelly Clarkson sang "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman" live, she hit a G6#.

I was listening to "TRL Christmas" last night and Angela Via does it again at the very, very end of "Christmas Wish."
It's broken up in bits though, she's not holding the note like in "Picture Perfect."

I hate when they do it. It totally ruins a song. Unless it's near the end or just in the background, there's no need to shriek in a song. It totally turns me off and it embarrasses me when I listen to the song/artist and there are people around....

Angela Via sings the high note in "Picture Perfect" for 6 seconds. You must have been thinking about when she holds a strong, but not high, note for 20 seconds in "Start Over Again." Angela can do the "Picture Perfect" note in concert, too. That's why the girls in front of me plugged their ears right before she sang the high note. (At least they knew when it was coming!)

I like the shriek when Mariah does it... it suits her and her songs and it sounds good. Mostly when I've heard others do it, it sounds foolish. Debeleh Morgan sounded lame when she did it. There was also this girl on Australian Idol that kept doing it and she sounded like an idiot doing so cos it didn't fit the songs and she was just trying to show off.

Mariah's the only one that should do it. She's the only one who can do it right!

I kinda wish Kelly would do it more often but I guess it doesn't really fit her music. When Mariah and Christina do it, it blows me away :o I hate Debelah Morgan's music

Mariah's the only one that should do it. She's the only one who can do it right! Mariah will tell you herself that she learned A LOT from the ORIGINAL 'shrieker', runner, trillest, vocal acrobatist Karen Clark Sheard. I remember reading an article and MC said that Karen has had a large impact on the way she sings and some of the vocal tricks she's famous for. I agree that Shanice is a BEAST when it comes to hitting those notes. She and Lisa Fischer(the million-dollar back-up singer) are some of the only ones that can actually compete with Mariah when it comes to hitting those glass-shattering notes.

Kelly's was impressive, but it was just ever so SLIGHTLY flat. Bugs me a bit.

Do you mean just any high note/shriek or the actual whistle registry? Chante Moore can make the whistle registry

My favorite Mariah whistle has to be the one in "Bringin On The Heartbreak." I really like it when they are strong like that and not airy. Emotions also has some extmemely impressive ones.
