Successful Follow ups(JoJo, Ciara, y not Milian?)

"dip it low" "goodies" and "get out" were 3 big hits at pop in 2004. Ciara and Jo Jo were both able to get successful follow ups with "1, 2 step" and "baby its u" but Milians follow up, "whatever u want" didnt recieve the same response. Why do u think that is? "whatever u want" is arguably as good as (if not better than)the other 2 follow ups. Do u think it was a lack of a push from the label? lack of interst form the public? did it get lost in the shuffle? or was the song just not good enough?

I think the song bombed because it was horribly boring. I don't know why she released this. She was asking for failure :(

I also thought it was more boring than the other girls' followups. Plus, JoJo and Ciara seem to be selling better-both are above 500K or nearly platinum arent they? Christina's total was about 300K?
I dont know why Christina didnt take off more. It seems like everything was in place for her to break through.

she's over 300k. her totals were really close to Brandys but brnady had a larger 1st week. She was some1 where closer or even past 350k.

"whatever u want" was always planned to be the 2nd single for some reason. On the cd sticker it said "includes the hits "dip it low" and "whatever u want." I think they went with that song because of the old school beat, and it was very up beat and radio friendly. Alot of times songs with old school, up beat samples do well, like "All for u"(janet)" love like this" (faith, so I guess they thought it would work for them too.......Also from the album reviews, this and "highway" were the only songs they really considered to be a standouts.

It didn't do well because you can actually dance to it, and (American radio thinks) Americans don't like that ;)

Mind you, it was also Christina's worst performing solo single of all her UK releases to date, so it's not just American radio. My thought? Bad single choice, dated compared to the rest of the album. Better choice would've been something odd and edgy, like Peanut Butter & Jelly. That probably would've done the trick, and would've introduced something new to the market.

very interesting points. I too think P&J would have been a good single but I get the feeling she doesnt want to be known soley for beig sexy. Get i think "get lose" would have also been a great single, and probably one of the best. To be honest, there are so many single possibilities with that album its a shame. its a very solid album, and it recieved a well deserved Grammy nomination.

Yes, that i'm really glad about. She's worked so hard for the recognition, I hope she gets far more of it.

the fact that she got 2 Grammy nominations and the others got none, it lets me know that she has the possiblity to come even stronger for her next album and some major people are recognizing her for her work and talent. I think with her 2 movies comin up, she has the ability to really do bigger things with her next release.

The person who said the song was dated was right on the money. The song sounded like something straight out of 1996. Actually, it reminds me of Immature's We Got It, and I'm not sure if that's good or bad. It's just really dated.

And her album has sold close to 3 times more, and is still in the top 20. Ciara has more appeal than Christina. Ciara is well on her way to superstardom. Christina is still on the b-list

Jojo's voice is more radio friendly than Christina. Put them both on a stage, and Jojo would sing circles around Christina. Jojo has a rare combination of pop appeal and has the ability to turn on the soul switch. Jojo has been set up perfectly for a career that has the ability to be very strong and successful.

Christina Milian kinda tricked the world. She came out with one of the hottest songs of 2004, hell, possibly one of the hottest song of the decade so far. But she didn't have a suitable follow up single on the entire album. If Milian is smart, she will make an urban leaning album in the vein of "Dip it Low" and leave the Mainstream Pop to the professionals.

a) Ciara has nothing. Let's be honest, she's tricked some radio programmers into thinking that "Goodies" was a song in the first place. I can't see someone that boring becoming a superstar. She'll have faded into obscurity by next year. Just because the radio likes her doesn't mean she's any good. Let's look at the millions of failed acts in America this year that have done awesomely everywhere else.

b) Do you own "It's About Time"? If so, you'd know there were many good follow-up possibilities, none were realized, as Island picked the absolute worst follow-up single possible. And I question what you mean by a "professional" when you talk about someone who's spent years writing awesome tracks and has had many big hits in other parts of the world, but has just not had the same fortune in America.

I'm very argumentative when one tells me that Christina Milian is inferior to Ciara. That just does not compute in my mind. Sorry if I offend, but that sort of comparison makes me shudder.

Well I think Ciara is cool for what she is. Goodies was a major hit and she had a good follow up. However i would dare not go so far as to act as if radio just loves HER because she has 2 hits. I think 1, 2 step was just a catchy song with lots of potential but she is not becoming any type of super star by and means of the word. I dont even think she will be on Ashanits level because Ashanti had album sells to go along with single success.Ciara is just one of the MANY people that score a couple of hits but never do anything major. If u want to compare other successful r&b females who had big hits from their first albums and became superstars take a look at Brandy or Monica. Or even Mya or Aaliyah for that matter. Ciara isnt on any of their levels.

And as far as Christina Milian being B-list, she is a b-lister with 2 Grammy nominations and lots of movies comming out and major opportunities. She is definately branching out and getting into all aspects of Hollywood and is ganing recognition from all the right places DESPITE lack of sales and a successful follow up to "dip it low". if Milian is a B-lister with her blockbuster films coming up and her nominations, than JoJo and Ciara must be C-listers because neither got any nominaitons and neither have anything outside of music going for them and after a couple of albums they will be obsolete.

I think "dip it low" only opened many more doors for her. I believe it was a re-introduction to the world. And after "be cool" and "man of the house" is released she will have more industry buzz around her and will be ready to really launch into superstardom with her next album which she wants to release this summer.

i know, i'm sorry, i tried. I'm touchy about Ciara in general. And you put it far more elegantly than I did. lol.

I think people fail to realize that Christina Milian has been successful in other major territories for 2 albums. That's significant in and of itself. Ciara's album has been generally panned by many. I'm hard pressed to believe that another successful single can come from Ciara's album. Then again, I wouldn't have though Goodies would EVER have caught on either, look what I know.

Ciara is definitely just as big, if not bigger than Christina is. There is just no denying that. Don't like you love for Christina or your disdain Ciara impair your judgement. So far, Ciara has had the FAR more successful career, hands down.

And it's not even just radio. Ciara's album is approaching four months on the charts and it's still in the pop twenty. She's pretty much assured of at least double platium now. Milian couldn't even sell half a million copies.

So is Milian's acting career what puts her over the top? What, that one movie she did with Nick Cannon? Yeah right! I'm not really ready to give her credit for a movie that hasn't come out yet. That's just stupid. What if those two movies bomb at the box office? We'll have to wait and see. All we have to go on now is what they've done to date. Ciara wins ten times out of ten if you compare that.

And if you want to look at Monica, Aaliyah, and Mya and compare to Ciara, I will do it gladly. Monica and Aaliyah had double platium debut albums and Mya's was platium. Ciara will definitely match that. It's too early to tell if she'll come close to Brandy's numbers. But one thing is for damn sure, none of those other 4 girls had a hit ANYWHERE near the level of "Goodies" or "1, 2 Step" on their debut albums.

So yeah, Ciara is priming herself to become the next superstar of R&B. I'd like to see the last time an artist had to huge hits right off the bat like Ciara and failed!

I think as far as music goes right now Ciara is more successful, but as far as over all I think Milian definately is more successful. She has movies:Love dont cost a thing, Torque, Be Cool,Man of the House.
"Be cool" is a highly anticipated sequaland she has a starring role in it, has alot of buzz about it and has 2 songs on the soundtrack. She is also a song writer for other artists and to top it off a model. AND she actually has gotten pretty good reviews for her acting.

I think Milian is just shaping up to be a well rounded entertainer. Music is only 1 part of her aspirations. If music doesnt work out she has other avenues to fall back on. MTV seems to like her a reasonable amount, she has hosted a show for them and done other things for them, and her acting is something that can definately keep her in the public eye and is somethin she can fall back on. Her film career is actually doing better than her music career at this pont. She is getting alot of roles and offers. She has the face and presence that can take her very far. "dip it low" was a launching point for her. Her multiple talents will take her far, she isnt just counting on the music to tak eher where she wants to go.

Jo Jo has potential to be around. She has a good voice and that can take her a little further as long as she plays her cards right. I hear that she is getting into acting, and with a pre-teen fan base she has the possibilty to grow and become a star. Maybe a more "hip" hillary duff or something.

Ciara is the below average looking female, who is nothing without a producer behind her. She is doing well now but when she becomes yesterdays news after her next album she will have NOTHING to fall back on. Double Platinum is no where in her future. I suggest some acting lessons or else she will have nothing to fall back on.

I think they key to lasting success in entertainment is being able to do more than 1 thing. Having multiple talents. Because in music u are hot today and no1 cares tomorrow.

I've become very uninterested in popular new music in my home country (aka music i can actually buy) because of artists like her. So while some people may really like her, I find her music generally repulsive and i'm not alone in my sentiments.

Either way, you're entitled to your opinion, and yes Ciara will probably be extremely successful this year with her album, but that's not to say I can't be hopeful that she'll fail miserably.

Milians was done before "dip it low" even became popular.  I'm sure if it was done again her score would be higher because unlike Ciara, Milian is actually attractive. That whole thing was done after "am to pm" came out. Even then she still got a higher rating for Talent AND accomplishments and fame than Ciara got lol.

Say what you want. It's obvious people love Ciara. Radio adores Ciara. No other woman (not even Beyonce's Child) can fuck with Ciara on the radio. The album has amazing legs. Jumped back into the top 20 after nearly a month.

Everything is going her way.
