Lately it seems each year we get at least one new mega R&B or rap act, one sleeper favorite, one adult alternative favorite and one Rock favorite that heavily impacts the airwave world.
In 2004, Switchfoot may well represent the Rock/Alternative base.
Over seven years, Switchfoot have released three albums, all critically praised and earning them underground success. ("Legend of Chin", "New Way To Be Human", "Learning To Breathe"). Their music, unlike many Alternative artists, expresses more optimistic and positive emotions and sentiments lyrically while also beaming with political and social satire.
Now, nearing a decade-long career together, Switchfoot have arisen to major-label success early, with their major-label debut "The Beautiful Letdown" already going gold and "Meant To Live", their breakout single, gracing Alternative and bound to be one of the biggest hits of 2004 on multiple other formats.
With a number of radio-ready tracks ("This Is Your Life", "More Than Fine", "Dare You To Move") with a number of tracks just holding influentiality lyrically: ("Redemption", "Adding To The Noise") "The Beautiful Letdown" can well become what Evanescence's "Fallen" was for 2003 or Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" was in 2002, and help Switchfoot become, possibly, the next Creed.
Will Switchfoot be landing massive footprints on 2004? Your thoughts on the band, predictions, doubts, etc.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I've only heard "Meant To Live," which I think will become a huge Pop hit and impact HAC as well. As long as you say they have other radio-friendly material, then I can see them having the type of success you're talking about.

They definetly deserve it! I just hope they don't become too overrated and become the next Evanescence.

I would love to see "Meant to Live" do very well on pop and I don't see why it wouldn't, but for some reason I think it is going to peak around #17 or #18.
As for their continuation on alternative... I haven't heard any of their other songs so I can't really say anything.

They have everything in place, as you say. There is a huge buzz over this band, and several people that don't pay much attention to music have asked me about them, and whether or not to get the album for their kids for Christmas.
I would not have guessed this when I picked the album up a few months ago, but from the buzz and how well Meant To Live is doing, I'd say, yeah, they look like the next big thing right now.

I love "I Dare You To Move". I hope they hit it big. I plan to buy The Beautiful Letdown.

"Dare You To Move" is probably the best song on the CD, and most likely to be their next pop single. I really don't hear anything else on the CD crossing over to pop.
The funny thing is DYTM is almost four years old. It appeared on the "Walk to Remember" soundtrack and on their 2000 album "Learning to Breathe"

The funny thing is DYTM is almost four years old. It appeared on the "Walk to Remember" soundtrack and on their 2000 album "Learning to Breathe" True, but the version that's on The Beautiful Letdown was a re-recorded version. From what I understand it's not drastically different than the old one, but you can tell them apart. If "Dare You to Move" isn't the next single, Columbia is insane. I could see it hitting #1 on multiple formats... it's seriously that good. After that, "Gone" might be a good choice for pop, but they may just want to record a new album since it would be around 2 years old by then.

You're right Matt, you can tell the two versions apart, but its not a big difference at all. Nothing like a J-Lo remix.
"Gone" is a fun song, but seems too comical for pop. If a third single is released, I'd go with "On Fire", which is a great ballad. This is one my favorite CDs of 2003.

I'm actually really pissed that the old mix of "Meant To Live" is the one that made the album, and not the one that's being played on the radio.
The one on the album is lethargic, warbled, and in a totally different key.

Switchfoot has 4 songs on the Walk To Remember soundtrack, I like them all, "Learning to Breathe" is probably my favorite, they should've released it back when the album/movie were out, I think it could've possibly charted. Some people may think some of their songs are kind of boring, they do have a lot of ballads.

It looks like " Dare You to Move" will be the next single. I was in Best Buy today, and I saw the "Beautiful Letdown" album. The sticker that was on the album the past few months said Featuring 'Meant to Live' 'Dare You to Move' 'This Is Your Life' The new one now says Featuring the smash hit 'Meant to Live' and 'Dare You to Move' in bigger letters. Something like that, anyway. I know that isn't a 100% indicator, but it's usually a pretty good sign.

"Dare You To Move" is pretty old, I definetly would've gone with "Gone" as the next single. I couldn't see "Dare You To Move" on Alternative, which is where it would be released first if they are sending another single to Alternative.

Well, " Dare You to Move" is definitely a lot more Alternative-friendly than "Gone".

Bump! I'd say they've done pretty well this year. And I might have gotten a bit carried away with saying that "Dare You to Move" could hit #1 on multiple formats, but top 10 on two (and soon to be three) formats -- Alternative, Pop, and Hot AC -- is not bad at all.

At least they changed the video for "Dare You To Move" from "Idiot in the movie Independence Day" to the surfing/70's childhood theme. The latter was definitely better, and the former briefly made me disinterested in the song.

well, with 2004 winding down, I can honestly say that Switchfoot is not the breakout band of the year, but it is one of them. Obviously, the title goes to Maroon 5, but Switchfoot is definitely #2 or #3, give or take a Hoobastank.

Switchfoot did an in-studio concert recently at my radio station and now they replay "Dare You to Move" from that in-studio appearance. It is excruciatingly bad. You feel sorry for the lead singer! He must have been having a Hoobastank moment! Anyone see them in concert? Was this an aberration or does the guy not have the pipes?

They had quite a lot of success off their debut, with "Crawling In The Dark" being an Alternative staple and "Running away" finding its way somewhat into mainstream. But I'd say Maroon 5 is the top breakthrough artist of the past year or so, though "Harder To Breathe" hit last year. Los Lonely Boys are probably below Switchfoot. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I them perform on AOL Sessions on Fuse and he sounded absolutely perfect. It seems like it's one of those notes that you can either hit or miss. Thanks, Ben
