Why Is "Shut Up" by the Black Eyed Peas Hitting #1 Everywhere, but the US?? It is a great song...and totally flopped in the US and is hitting #1 in the UK & Australia...i just dont get it. Why is ths US such a difficult country music-wise?!

Because the song sucks, and the UK and Australia haven't figured it out yet.
However Robbie Williams never hit big here, so chalk one up against the US for that one.
Different countries just have different tastes in music. Thats all. Garth Brooks is the perfect example, one of the best selling artists ever in the US, and hasn't done much anywhere else.

It even hit #1 in Canada, which is surprising, because the charts for both countries seem similar.

This song is far superior to "WITL?" and yet it's doing nothing. None of the NYC stations ever even added it. In fact, if it weren't for that commercial it's featured in I never would have even heard it! (Since I had no plans on DLing it based on my hatred for "WITL?") But, I did DL it now.... it's great.

David Hasselhoff is like a king in Germany, but here he's....David Hasselhoff Seriously, Radiohead is huge outside of the US, but radiowise here, they don't really do all that well. I like Shut Up about as much as I do Where is the Love. I like the beat to it. It's decent, but not #1 material in my book.

I actually really like the song as well. I really like the "We try to make it work" part. Too bad it flopped! We need more good rap on the radio.

I think this song is terrible just like the first one. The last thing we need is horrible sounding rap music. This song flopped for one reason and one reason only, ITS HORRIBLE!

I'm with Adonis on this one, both songs deserved to flop IMO. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

"Shut Up" is a million times better than "Whurr is da Luv". There's a certain charm to "Shut Up" that makes me all giddy when i hear it. It should have done better. Ah well, i live in canada and it hit #1 here, so it's all good.

OMG... I first thought this topic was about Mr. Jessica Simpson's song -- I wish I was kidding.

Because the song sucks, and the UK and Australia haven't figured it out yet. LOL! That pretty much sums it up.

I don't get this at all either. I remember back in September, this song was all over DC's Hot 99.5. Then I took a trip to Central PA, and it was all over the radio there too. I thought this was a bona fide hit. It was getting requests, girls loved it, and it was climbing the charts. Then, it just stopped. It never got any of the other major market stations (recurrentitis I guess, Z100 was playing "Where Is the Love" forever), and eventually the stations that had supported it started dropping it as well.
I thought there was actually going to be a " Dixie Chicks"-type fiasco over this song, since they were showing clips of President Bush while Black Eyed Peas were performing the song on the European Music Awards. Hmm... maybe that's why the song is hitting #1 in so many countries. ???
If "Hey Mama" somehow ends up taking off, I bet we'll see a rerelease of "Shut Up".

The only good part of the song is the hook that that girl sings. The rest is annoying.

It's a great song.... my favourite part is the 'shut up just shut up shut up' part.
It's funny how people here don't really like it. It seems like everyone in Australia loves that song... I always hear people talking about it wherever I go and it's everybody - younger/older, people that don't normally like 'urban' or whatever. I think it's quite poppy and catchy that's why it's done so well.
I'm glad it's #1 this week in Australia, even though they booted Delta Goodrem off the top spot.

I believe that this group is seen as a one hit wonder in the US (one big hit). They may have had smaller hits in the past. I don't know. I wonder if the first song would have even been a hit on radio in the US without the Justin Timberlake connection. Their album is already out of the top 100 in the US.

They had a duet with Macy Gray a few years ago called "Request Line" Im not sure of the exact peaks, but I believe it recieved a medium amount of airplay on the Rhythmic format.
