Yeah this is definitly gonna be Mariah's year. Everyone will be at her feet and begging for forgiveness. She didn't deserve the bad press. Now they're gonna be all over her.
You can't forget abt Amerie though. Amerie '05!

No, Green Day is not the "it" of 2005. They have 1 song. Ciara unfortunately people think her 2-note range is something special. 50 Cent I fear people are stupid enough to fall for again as well.

No, Green Day is not the "it" of 2005. They have 1 song. They have two hit songs (you can't pretend the song "American Idiot" doesn't exist because it didn't hit the Pop chart), one of them already the biggest rock hit since "How You Remind Me", and 7 Grammy nominations. That's pretty good in my book.

Rob Thomas!!!! (Hopefully) That wouldn't surprise me. He has the personality, and I like the first single. If it catches on with radio, he could be huge.

That's pretty good in my book. True, but I don't see them going straight to the top after this just cause it's Green Day. They might score another minor top 40 from this album, but that may be it. Probably similar to Hoobastank last year.

Probably similar to Hoobastank last year. You're only looking at Pop radio. It's not the only radio format, and on top of that, radio isn't the only determinant of an artist's popularity. When Norah Jones was an it-person, she was barely getting airplay at all. Green Day is very "it" right now, imo. If I can walk into my cousin's house to find my 12 year old girl cousin listening to Green Day, that tells me they've gone beyond boundaries this time.

Id say if Green Day win a few Grammys and continue to have monster hits on at least their home format...and sales keep steady...they would definitely be one of the "it" people. (I think every year has a few it people, except in some cases when one obviously overshadows the rest, like Usher) I think its very likely Green Day will succeed at all three conditions that I mentioned.

when they released the empowering BOBD, the resounded with the another group of teenagers that are loners I understand what you are saying in your post, and I kind of agree that it may have taken a politically charged song for such a comeback. I don't think its strictly due to the teenage population though. Sure, they play some part in driving the success, but there really is something special about BOBD. Green Day definitely played their cards right by releasing this as a follow-up to "American Idiot" rather than a lead single. I can't remember a song that has been so well received (the closest I can think of is "All You Wanted" by Michelle Branch).

I think every gender have they're own standouts..
R&B: Usher, Mario, Ciara HIP HOP/RAP: Game, Eminem, 50 Cents ROCK: Greenday, U2 POP: Kelly Clarkson
They're the most popular artists of the moment.. most played, biggest sellers.

I would by no stretch consider Mario an "it" person. He has a big hit, that's it. Certainly not the first person to have a huge hit, that alone doesn't classify you as "the" thing.

Probably similar to Hoobastank last year. Have you heard the album??? >:( "Wake Me Up When September Ends" SCREAMS top 10, if not #1. AND, it SCREAMS HAC #1. Holiday will no doubt top Alt for multi-weeks, and people are already calling "Jesus Of Suburbia" one of the greatest album tracks ever. Please, listen to the album before making judgment. Anyway, Green Day, Rob, and Mariah will be "it" for at least one part of this year, and the Killers could do it if some station in NYC (I won't name names) would just pick up Mr. Brightside. Some MD's/PD's really puzzle me. Kelly is in too. And she's hot! Edit: Anyone know when Kanye's going to release a new album? I doubt it'll be '05, but if it is, it'll be hyped to death.

Anyway, Green Day, Rob, and Mariah will be "it" for at least one part of this year, I'm on cloud nine about this. Remember in 1998 when "Time Of Your Life," "3 A.M.," and "My All" were all on the charts together? Yeahhhh 2005 bringin' it back! My favorite period in music is making the "it" revival.

Kelly Clarkson is my best bet right now. I just don't see "Holiday" by Green Day doing too well.
Rob Thomas is a good guess.

Maybe the definition of an "It" person has changed and will be new and improved. Maybe the new "It" person will have to have more talent to back up their image. That would be a surprise wouldn't it? Imagine having an "It" person like Elvis or "It" group like The Beatles. The list of candidates is pretty small if this is the case and LOTS and LOTS of people can easily be eliminated. Whoever the next "It" person is their talent will be scrutinized a little more closely than in past years because of all the counterfeits posing as pop stars.
4 things come to mind to be the next "It": High character (in the beginning at least), unquestioned talent, BIG chart and radio success, and sexy good looks. That narrows the field a little, huh?
Oh yeah, and I don't think "comebackers" can be called "its".

I just don't see "Holiday" by Green Day doing too well. Well, obviously not on pop... but it'll shoot straight to #1 on their home, Alt, when stations finally let go of BOBD... it may pull Act. Rock #1, too!
