Obviously this is mainly under old hot 100 rules.
I find it interesting that 'Spice Up Your Life' & 'Goodbye' managed to reach #18 and #11 on the hot 100 respectively, yet never made the pop top 40. 'Spice' did chart at Rhythmic, but 'Goodbye' didn't have any airplay whatsoever from what I can see. Surely it's success as a single would've prompted Radio to give it some spinnage. They must have totally blacklisted the band after 'Too Much'.
'Stop' also, reaching #16 but barely scraping the bottom of the CHR charts.

Stronger - Britney Spears(#11 Hot 100, #53 Hot 100 Airplay)
Mainly thanks to that CD single which reached #1 singles sales.

And this is why Billboard is so inaccurate, imo.
People become familar with a song by airplay. A song becomes popular by airplay.
Billboard just doesnt represent these statistics well. That's why I never go by what Billboard's peaks are for songs.

Speaking of which: The Christmas Song(Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) - Christina Aguilera. #18 on the Hot 100. Would people really believe this was a bigger hit than Fighter & Dirrty & The Voice Within? I think not

Clay Aiken - "This Is The Night"
Moderate hit at AC, but barely scraped the top 50 at pop.

I think not Nope.. and if today's singles market, or what's left of it, was what it was then, they probably wouldn't appear to be. Exactly why I don't worry much about Billboard anymore.

And this is why Billboard is so inaccurate, imo. Sigh, no, it isn't.

Who cares about airplay if it isn't generating sales? At the end of the day you are as popular as many tickets, cds, singles etc as you can sell.

Eden's Crush: "Get Over Yourself" debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with not much airplay outside of New York City. I wouldn't be surprised if WHTZ played it the most out of any CHR-Pop station. The album was released at least three months after the show ended. Another single that debuted in the Top 50 of Billboard Hot 100 was Mariah Carey featuring Snoop Dogg: "Crybaby." It was a double A-side and "Crybaby" ahd more audience than "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme). During its original release, "Can't Fight The Moonlight" did better in singles sales than airplay. MercyMe: "I Can Only Imagine" had a low peak on the Billboard Hot 100 but was a sales Number 1. Same goes for Madonna: "Nothing Fails" which did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael W. Smith only gets Christian airplay, but his albums do well enough that the singles work. He even had two albums in the Top 100 at once that were released a year apart (it's obviously easier to have two albums in the Top 100 at once if you release a studio and live album in one year like Linkin Park).

Pearl Jam's "Daughter" and "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" were played even though Pearl Jam released no singles from "Vs."

Who could forget the biggest selling single of all time, "Candle In The Wind 1997"! It appeared in the Top 10 of the year end Hot 100 for both '97 and '98, the former where it was of course #1 for the year.
It was issued as a single along with "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" (I'm not sure which was the A-side). In the US, "Something..." got a little more airplay, but neither track was heard much on radio considering the sales it produced. Of course, we know the circumstances that led to the single's high sales.

It was issued as a single along with "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" (I'm not sure which was the A-side). "Something" was technically the A-side (it was the only title listed on the spine of the CD-single), but obviously most people bought the single for "Candle" (since it wasn't available on his album).
