Lots of contenders for me, but one song stands head and shoulders abover the rest.
Kate Bush 'Get Out Of My House'. It's about a woman being raped for the second time in her life, and it's so incredibly intense and powerful. You'll never hear anything like it again. The house is used as a metaphor for her body, and her delivery is so haunting. Can't reccomend it enough. Download it or find it on her incredible album 'The Dreaming'.
Wierd how that's another similarity between Kate & tori Amos, who of course also has a famous song about rape, "Me & A Gun". Kate recorded hers in 1982 though.

It's a tie between 50 Cent's "In Da Club", Ashanti's "Rock With You" (or any song where she sings "baby, baby, oh baby) & Clay Aiken's "Invisible".
Anyway, they all move me to extreme revulsion/anger/hate.

I'm not sure. Perhaps Lene Marlin's "Maybe I'll Go."

Madonna's "Mer Girl" really creeped/saddened me...so yeah I guess I could say that that song made me feel something a little heavier than any other song.

The almost completely unknown Def Leppard's "Breathe a Sigh"
My wife was really stressed out one time and I played this bluesy ballad for her and it really helped relax her. For those that download (which I personally don't really condone) it is a song worth checking out.

I pick this song because this band is the only band I've been such a fan of...Evanescence-My Immortal.
I lost my great-grandmother a year and a half ago and I have so many great memories from my childhood living in this house. It was a strange moment for me because she was always around. It was my first real experience with death.
When I first heard this song, it made me think of her.
She still has all of me :'(

"You look at me and see the girl Who lives inside the golden world But don't believe That's all there is to see You'll never know the real me
She smiles through a thousand tears And harbours adolescent fears She dreams of all That she can never be She wades in insecurity yeah And hides herself inside of me
Don't say she takes it all for granted I'm well aware of all I have Don't think that I am disenchanted Please understand
It seems as though I've always been Somebody outside looking in Well, here I am for all of them to bleed But they can't take my heart from me And they can't bring me to my knees They'll never know the real me"
Mariah Carey's "Looking In"

I think Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton is just such a sad song. Can't imagine how hard it was for him to write.

Breathe's early 90s hit "Does She Love That Man?" struck a chord with me because of a breakup with a girlfriend--she left me for another guy.
"Everything You Want" was another mover. I told this story before--a person I was in love with decided I was not the one for her and in fact, was engaged (and later married) to someone else.
"Christmas Shoes" made me cry towards the end the first time I heard it.

I figured I'd post the lyrics to Breathe a Sigh anyway
Breathe a Sigh Lyrics
Let me down slow and easy Cause there ain't nothin' I can do I hope and pray my faith won't leave me When it comes down to me and you
Try a little tenderness I die a little For a long lost sweet caress
You lyin' next to me Fulfilled some destiny I wanna cry But I breathe a sigh
Just a little bit of letting go I don't want you to know I wanna cry But I breathe a sigh
Overflow of emotion And a hurt that'll never heal If you close the door forever The fate of pain is sealed
Try a little tenderness I die a little For a long lost sweet caress
I more than long for your affection I tell you know that ain't so Not even gentle persuasion Is ever gonna let me go Won't you let me breathe

one of the saddest songs has to be Christina Aguilera's "I'm OK"...
Once upon a time there was a girl In her early years she had to learn How to grow up living in a war that she called home Never know just where to turn for shelter from the storm Hurt me to see the pain across my mother's face Everytime my father's fist would put her in her place Hearing all the yelling I would cry up in my room Hoping it would be over soon
Bruises fade father, but the pain remains the same And I still remember how you kept me so afraid Strength is my mother for all the love she gave Every morning that I wake I look back to yesterday And I'm OK I often wonder why I carry all this guilt When it's you that helped me put up all these walls I've built Shadows stir at night through a crack in the door The echo of a broken child screaming "please no more" Daddy, don't you understand the damage you have done To you it's just a memory, but for me it still lives on
Bruises fade father, but the pain remains the same And I still remember how you kept me so, so afraid Strength is my mother for all the love she gave Every morning that I wake I look back to yesterday
It's not so easy to forget All the lines you left along her neck When I was thrown against cold stairs And every day I'm afraid to come home In fear of what I might see there
Bruises fade father but the pain remains the same And I still remember how you kept me so afraid Strength is my mother for all the love she gave Every morning that I wake I look back to yesterday And I'm OK I'm OK

"Christmas Shoes" made me cry towards the end the first time I heard it. Me too. The movie based on the song was on a few weeks back and I cried several times while watching it. Other songs that make me cry include: "Emily" by Beth Nielsen Chapman (to the point where I can't even listen to it anymore!) "Angels Among Us" by Alabama "Don't Take The Girl" by Tim McGraw "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg I'm sure I'll think of a few others.

"Christmas Shoes" made me cry towards the end the first time I heard it. Oh this song is so sad! The chorus always gets me. It's something abotu the tune and the words together, it wouldn't be sad if it was just said. Same thing with the song "Stole" by Kelly Rowland.

Hmmm, I can't think of a good example for me right now. The most moving song was probably a track from Natalie Merchant's 'Ophelia' CD that was played at my grandfather's funeral. I have no idea what the song was called.
Otherwise, two songs by Chantal Kreviazuk can have an effect on me depending on the situation in which I hear them. 'Blue' and 'Feels Like Home'.

I adore Sheryl Crow's Crash and Burn. It's one of my favorite songs ever. When her voice breaks during the last chorus (singing "learn"), I get chills down my spine!!
You guys really should listen to it, it's the best thing Sheryl has ever done.

U2's "With Or Without You"
Who could ever forget this? It's probably the quintessential hit of U2. Why should it not? Never felt such empassioned vocals and The Edge's meaty guitar sound so smooth and imitate the melancholy so well.
Live's "Lightning Crashes" is also powerful to me. "Pillar of Davidson" too, which Michael Stipe provides guest vocals.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Pretty much anything Matthew Good writes and sings moves me. The song Raygun in particular. It was like the soundtrack to my life at the time.

That will have to go to the Counting Crows and "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby." Four years ago, I was having a shitty day week month, year, and then on top of that all the sudden everything hit on one weekend, and I decided I was too tired to do anything so I slept all the way through school one day and I woke up at about 1 or 2 PM. I had accidentally left the radio on overnight and I woke up to the beginning of that song, which went "I woke up in mid afternoon coz that's when it all hurts the most." And I bawled for probably an hour. I haven't cried since.

Robbie Williams has a song on his "Escapology" CD called "Nan's Song" and he wrote it about his grandma. Everything in that song reminds me of my grandma. It's just a great song and it makes me realize how much I love my grandma.
Thanks, Ben

Strangely, Garth Brooks' ode to those affected by the Murrah bombing, "The Change". Even though I knew noone who was (literally) affected or killed, and even though I didn't even hear the "boom" (I worked in a basement office at the time), driving to work on the one-year anniversary, with that song playing on the radio and everyone's headlights on (per the radio stations' requests), I got a little snockered by it.
Other unmentioned songs not tied to anything in particular would be Better Midler's "The Rose", and though I'm not much of a rah-rah, fist-pumping, glory-of-victory kinda guy, Whitney Houston's "One Moment In Time" thrilled as she whooped it up at the end. I'm sure there're a couple more, but they're not coming to me at this late hour...

Dishwalla's Angels and Devils pretty moving.
I really think Eva Cassidy's version of Time After Time is real moving too. What a great interpretation.

Many might not have heard this song, but this is a song I recommend to all. It's house music, but it has some soul to it. I had liked the song when it came out. After the events of 9/11/01 occurred, the lyrics in this song took on a whole new meaning. You may have to read the lyrics a couple times to see that.
Kings Of Tomorrow Featuring Julie McKnight - Finally
Time marches on never ending, time keeps its own time, Here we stand at beginning, and then goes passing us by, And I, I, I can dream for us all, I hope I'm in a better state, When here and now crumbles and falls and you, you, you who make worlds collide I knew you'd come knocking one day, unannounced like a thief in the night.
Where do we go from here, time ain't nothing but time, I now have no fear of my fears And no more tears to cry, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow means nothing at all If we don't hear the line, when today places its call, and morning, morning, morning Won't ever be the same, now I won't make the same mistakes, time and time again (5x)
Chorus So tell me how do you do Finally I meet you You don't know what I've been through, waiting and wondering about you I had a dream my trip would end at you, and now I know paradise.
1st verse again flipped
Chorus (2x)
I felt the same way with Sarah McLachlan's "World On Fire."
Hearts are worn in these dark ages You're not alone in this story's pages Night has fallen amongst the living and the dying And I try to hold it in, yeah I try to hold it in
[Chorus] The world's on fire and It's more than I can handle I'll tap into the water (I try to pull my ship) I try to bring more More than I can handle (Bring it to the table) Bring what I am able
I watch the heavens and I find a calling Something I can do to change this moment Stay close to me while the sky is falling Don't wanna be left alone, don't wanna be alone
[Chorus]
Hearts break, hearts mend Love still hurts Visions clash, planes crash Still there's talk of Saving souls, still the cold Is closing in on us
We part the veil on our killer sun Stray from the straight line on this short run The more we take, the less we become A fortune of one that means less for some
[Chorus X2]

Unbreak My heart - Toni Braxton
This song is so amazing. Anyone who has ever been heartbroken knows just what I am talkin about.
