The Strokes, White Stripes etc?
They are having moderate to good success on rock and alternative, but what happened to this being the wave of the future pop star?
The Datsuns put out an incredible album with high energy, maybe too high, I don't know. Then there was the D4, the Hives, The Vines. This was reported to be the big wave. I can't deny that since tons of these bands were signed to record deals and promoted, that it is indeed a wave of something, but little to no pop hits were generated from these groups.
What happened? Is it over all ready for these groups, or are they just getting started?

Simple. The music is garbage. The singers sound like the have marbles in their mouth, and the instruments are out of tune. Nobody except the music elite like this stuff. They have sold have their records on hype and the fact that it is "cool" to like this stuff.
Kind of like electronica five or six years ago. Everyoe thought this would catch on, but the whole boy band/teen pop thing came and took over.

I believe that both of these band haven't seen their greatest successes yet. I think The White Stripes are going to blow up huge just from the reaction to SNA and THBTB. As for The Strokes I find them rather dull but they seem to be building a sturdy fan base. So I expect big things from both of these bands in the future.

Or did I mix them up with another band? And The White Stripes is in the Alternative Top 10 with "Button". But you seem to be talking about their pop potential. I don't think they ever had any. Not that they wanted to!

I agree that they seem to be intentionally singing poorly which detracts some from the music. However, a group like the Datsuns almost harkens back to late 60's early 70's hard rock with some really good guitar work.

Maybe ?Rock success was all anyone was predicting but it seemed that for a while you couldn't find a magazine cover without one of those bands the hype seemed to be way out of proportion to the actual success of these bands.

They never died down yet, they're just not on the pop charts. The Strokes will need more alternative success for that to be possible. Since the White Stripes are on V2, which has as many creative decisions as an indie label, and Jack wouldn't want to be on pop at all I bet, they would only have a hit if stations unsolicitedly played them. Jet will have a chance since they're ripoff artists.
