I'd never heard of these guys before about 2 weeks ago, but in that short span of time I've heard friends talk about them, seen magazine articles about them, seen 2 albums debut strong on the BB200, etc.
Basically, based on what people say I think I might like them a lot. But, before I blindly try them, I was wondering if anyone could recommend specific songs to check out?
Also, can anyone explain to me what accounts for their sudden popularity?

They performed at the Vote for Change concert that I went to last fall. They weren't very good IMO. But I heard after the fact that they are pretty celebrated emo band. Go figure. It is basically Conor Oberst who is Bright Eyes, I believe. He was so drunk at the concert that when he was jumping around on stage he almost knocked right into the Boss. We were waiting for an accident to happen when he jumped repeatedly up on the drums. Didn't happen, darn! I'd actually like to check out an album by him cuz I heard he has some good lyrics. But from what I heard at the concert, the guy can write songs, but his voice is not his strong point!

Well the emo movement is at its peak these days (or at least at my high school) and they had four other albums out. Their 2002 release didn't have any hits, but that's what brought on their fan base, as the album did make the Billboard chart at a #161 peak.
I guess two songs from that album would be noteworthy: "Bowl of Oranges" and "Lover I Don't Have To Love"

I'm only familiar with a couple of their songs, but all of the songs I have heard are pretty good.

I guess two songs from that album would be noteworthy: "Bowl of Oranges" and "Lover I Don't Have To Love" Those are the only two Bright Eyes songs I've actually heard. Carson Daly played "Lover" on his defunct "Out of the Box" radio program all during the fall of '02, and I adored it instantly. Then in the spring of '03, 120 Minutes played the "Bowl of Oranges" video quite a bit. It looked like paper animation, only it was a lot more detailed than say, South Park.

Alright, I DLed the two recommended songs. I was really surprised by what I heard. I was expecting something almost like Box Car Racer for some reason.
"Bowl of Oranges" reminds me of like Phish meets Five for Fighting. It's alright.
"Lover I Don't Have To Love" is really good.

Yeah, "Lover I Don't Have To Love" was an instant smash hit for me the minute I heard the song in January of '04, and a great title for a song, too. I listened to "Bowl Of Oranges" a couple months later, and I heard most of one of his CD's in the car of a guy I work with a couple weeks ago. It seems like more of his songs sound like "Bowl Of Oranges". I think I'd be more interested if the songs were more like "LIDHTL".

But I heard after the fact that they are pretty celebrated emo band. Go figure. That's right: go figure. Bright Eyes are as emo as Simple Plan are punk! The main difference is that this works on Bright Eyes favor. It is basically Conor Oberst who is Bright Eyes, I believe. You're almost believing right: he is Bright Eyes. The rest are just guests and session musicians. From concert reports I've read so far, he's not drunk at all, he's just like that!

Like most who have responded here, I only have a limited knowledge of Bright Eyes' catalog, but "Road to Joy" is a pretty cool song that I'd recommend. That's right: go figure. Bright Eyes are as emo as Simple Plan are punk! The main difference is that this works on Bright Eyes favor. Wait, are you saying that Bright Eyes isn't emo?

I don't think he's anywhere in the ballpark of this thing people call "emo".

How about that, I mention "Road to Joy" and it turns out to be his most popular track at Alternative so far with 38 spins on 3 stations (including KROQ). I've posted the mp3 here.
