Think about it; there are many oldies stations across the country, but the multi-decade stations play 50s, 60s and 70s music. There were a few stations that played just 70's music (because they didn't want a disco song to be played right after an Elvis song, perhaps?) and more play just 80s music, because it just doesn't sound right with the 50s songs. But I predict that eventually, 80s songs will be added to the mix. What do you think will happen? I'm thinking anything with rap would not be played. Even if they eliminate the 50s (which is something I also predict might be happening), it still won't sound right with the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. Who would want to hear "Wild Thang" by Tone Loc after "Ferry Cross The Mersy" by Gerry & The Pacemakers? Or do you think that 80s music won't be added to multi-decade oldies stations and they'll continue to play only 50's through 70's tunes?

The original concept of "oldies" stations was to play music from the mid '50s to the early '70s, mostly pop/rock and R&B. However, I guess as time went by, music from the '50s, with the exception of some Elvis tunes, were played much less. Now the most played songs are probably songs from the mid to late '60s.
I really don't consider disco of the '70s to go under the term "oldies"...even classic rock from the '70s, with the exception of maybe the Eagles or Pink Floyd, seems like a different period in music altogether. As far as the '80s go, very few '80s tracks would suit the oldies format...perhaps Billy Joel or Whitney Houston or something, but even those artists seem out of place with the Beatles and the Temptations etc..
What an oldies station would play in the future is really anyone's guess...in fact, I think there was a thread on that very topic some time back.
I haven't listened to an oldies station in over a decade...before I turned 10 that was practically all I used to listen to, lol..

The Year 2026:
Good afternoon, you're listening to the OLD, WOLD-FM. Right now, we're going to play a classic from 1999 from Britney Spears. It's called Baby One More Time, and it's here on the OLD!

Jeff mentioned he heard "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" by Melissa Manchester on WQJQ. Yeah, I did hear that song on WQJQ.
I also heard the following '80s songs on WQJQ: Charlie Dore--Pilot Of The Airwaves Joey Scarbury--Believe It Or Not Soft Cell--Tainted Love The S.O.S. Band--Take Your Time (Do It Right) Joan Jett & The Blackhearts--I Love Rock N Roll
There could be many more other '80s songs.

My understanding of the whole issue is that oldies stations have been phasing out 50's music because it no longer appeals to the target audience. The majority of people who listen to these stations grew up in the 60's and 70's and that's what heavily focused on now.
That being said, it's probably only matter of time (10-15 years?) before 60's music is gone from FM and 80's becomes commonplace for the oldies format.
