I was wondering what everyone's opinion on this was.
I have done some thinking, and I think that 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite" is the song of the decade so far. It was a huge hit, a song that everyone knows. It was the biggest hit of the year on pop in 2000, it was (I think) # 1 for the year on all three rock formats.
I believe it was a song that changed two different formats: It was the first hard-rock song in a long time to hit # 1 on Pop (since there has been Creed, Nickelback, Linkin Park, and Evanescence), and it was instrumental in changing the Alternative format into the hard-rock based format that it is today.
So what do you guys think is the song of the decade so far?

I think a case could be made for "In Da Club". Most of the decade of the 2000s has been dominated by hip-hop on the singles charts, and "In Da Club" was possibly the biggest one. (Just look at its longevity on the pop chart -- coming up on a full year in the sans-recurrent-rule top 40.)

I never thought Kryptonite was that big. Anyway, now that I see it in front of me, it's definitely got the credentials. Is When I'm Gone a future contender?
Anyway, Hey Ya is going to be the next song to make a case for Song of the Decade. #1 on Billboard for 9 weeks, a multiformat smash that's STILL going on Hot AC.

If you go by purely credentials, sure "When I'm Gone", "How You Remind Me", and "Kryptonite" are the main contenders.
But hearing "In Da Club" come on the radio elicits that "yeahhh!" when it comes on, and everyone in the room jams to it, and it immediately takes me back to last year and all the good memories I have associated with it. The rock-lite songs with incredible longevity seem more like background noise.
It's those intangibles that "In Da Club" has that make it the song of the decade so far.

"How You Remind Me" appeas to be a bigger hit than "Kryptonite" to me.
As far as rock tracks are concerned, "How You Remind Me" would have to be the biggest smash, with "In The End" second.
However, I agree "Hey Ya" can become a hit this decade of massive proportions. But with this single being released almost three years later, it likely can't compete with HYRM.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

If you go by purely credentials, sure "When I'm Gone", "How You Remind Me", and "Kryptonite" are the main contenders. I disagree. "When I'm Gone" is receiving very little recurrent airplay in comparison. I think the #1 song of the 00s should go to "In The End".

I wouldn't count out Lifehouse's "Hanging By A Moment" It doesn't really seem like "Kryptonite" was that big but that's just me because I really didn't keep up with radio until 2001. Nickelback seems like the biggest song of the decade, I really don't think "In Da Club" would be #1, it was only big on 3 formats, I think, unlike the rock songs which were big on 5 formats. I would say by the end of this decade "Hey Ya" will be the biggest song.

No. It's not song of the decade. The rock song of the decade is probably "In the End", or maybe "With Arms Wide Open".
I would rank "Lose Yourself" over "In Da Club" as rap song of the decade.
"Bye Bye Bye" is probably the pop song of the decade.
As far as overall song of the decade combining the formats, I'd say "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed.

"When I'm Gone" is too new. I would restrict this to songs that have been out at least half the decade. You also have to mention "Everything You Want" for being Number 1 for the year on CHR-Pop over the song that yielded the best first-week sales of all-time.

Not that this thread has anything to do with single sales, but what song are you talking about? "Bye Bye Bye" wasn't even commercially released. Regarding the topic of this thread, it's not asking for the most successful hit of this decade chartwise -- rather, though, it's asking which songs seem to stand out most in people's minds, had the greatest effect (or will have) on the music scene, or seem to best represent the decade's music styles so far. That said, I think both "In Da Club" and "Kryptonite" are good choices for reasons already mentioned. "Lose Yourself" and "In The End" as well.

The song is great and will be considered a classic but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the best song of the past decade

"Kryptonite", "How You Remind Me", and "In The End" are all way too overrated, and not that good to begin with.

The song of the decade is definitely "Private Emotion" by Ricky Martin featuring Meja! ;)

The same could be said for "Lose Yourself" and "In Da Club," I think these 2 songs are more overrated than any of the 3 songs listed above.

All the rock songs mentioned would be contenders for the top song of the decade so far. "Everything You Want", "Kryptonite", "With Arms Wide Open", "Hanging By A Moment", "How You Remind Me", "In The End" and "When I'm Gone" would be the leading candidates. I think "Drive", "It's Been Awhile", "Blurry", "Bring Me To Life" and "Here Without You" are close behind and would beat out any rap song or any other non-rock song. I'm tempted to include "Clocks", but it didn't do so well in the Pop category.
In the overall picture, "In Da Club" is an insignificant song and 50 Cent the flavor of the season. They're nothing special and relatively ephemeral. He just happened to come out with the type of "music" that was hot at the time. (I put "music" in quotes, because strictly speaking, what distinguishes music from noise is the melody, and there is little if any of that in "In Da Club".) I'm not sure that "Hey Ya" will have the perseverance, but it has all the other credentials to be among the top songs of the decade.
And if you were to exclude minors, or even put them on an even keel with adults, then the rap songs would fall further into irrelevance, because the radio and music industry, and the charts, especially the ones that measure "Pop" and "R&B" (quotes again because they don't adequately describe most of the music they contain), overwhelmingly measure the tastes of the under 18 crowd, not the adults. "Clocks" in that case would definitely be a contender.
If I were to choose one song, it would be "Kryptonite", though "In The End" and "When I'm Gone" would battle it out for a close 2nd, and all the other songs I mentioned in the first paragraph wouldn't be far behind. It's interesting that 3 Doors Down has 3 songs among the biggest in the decade so far.

You're all wrong...it's "The Ketchup Song"!!!
Seriously, even though it wasn't the biggest hit, I think you can make an argument for "Everything You Want".

Kryptonite, NO
To me song of the decade is a huge distinction
Well I guess it depends on the criteria, like most spun, most listened to, etc.
but just by my standards, people don't even know what 'Kryptonite' sounds like
If I asked my mom, she wouldnt know it
If I asked her about In Da Club, she'd definitely know it
Kryptonite wasn't really that big, to me
