So I heard 'I'm The Only One' on the radio yesterday and decided to download that and a few other songs.
Listening to that, 'Come To My Window', and 'Breathe', I can't help but feel like these songs sound like they should be rock classics.
But despite critical acclaim, she's been mostly ignored. I don't know if it's because she's a lesbian, or not that attractive, or what, but I just feel like if someone else sang these songs they could have been huge.
Anyone else agree? Disagree?

I thought "Come To My Window" and "I'm The Only One" were huge (and Melissa got plenty of airplay and acclaim for a few years in the mid-'90s). ???

She makes some good music. I guess she does not get the right type of promo for her work.

Her material is always good. I agree she's pretty underrated and often gets overlooked. I love "Breathe" and the singles from her last album, "I Wanna Be In Love" and "Enough Of Me" were awesome as well.

I'm with MST3K on this one. Her time was in the mid-90's. She got a lot of airplay and it would have been impossible to ignore her at that time. It seemed like she actually got MORE attention because she was a lesbian, not less.
I liked "Come To My Window", "I'm The Only One", and "Your Little Secret", and the first two will always be AC/Hot AC classics. Frankly, I don't think her more recent stuff is that great, and I don't think she's evolved much as an artist.

And I'll agree with you there. Perhaps it's because she has such a distinctive voice/style, but it seems (to me, at least) that all of her stuff from 1996 or so onward sounds the same. Maybe it's just my ears though. :)

Let's not forget "If I Wanted To" and "I Want To Come Over". Those both hit the Top Ten, if my memory serves me correctly, although neither gets much if any recurrent play like the first two.

I don't think she's underrated at all. Like everyone said she got her due in the mid 90s, and ever since, she's just been putting out inferior rehashes of her old hits. And her new single "Lucky" is just horrible.
If anyone wants to check out a really good song by her, I recommend listening to the Breakdown album track "Into the Dark." It's nothing like her singles and I'd love to see her go in that direction.

But despite critical acclaim, she's been mostly ignored. I can name several reasons for that first statement. The song "Breathe" is an original song from an original ROCK band named Greenwheel. I had the privilege of speaking with the lead singer, Ryan(in person) of the band last week, as I saw them in concert for the 1st time, for there album preview party they had, since there song has been covered by Etheridge. I told him to "do me a favor, if Island/Def Jam Records isn't giving your band the recognition you deserve, when your contract expires, PLEASE go in search of a label who will let people hear your music, and not let some other person sing a song that was originally great to begin with". I was honored, just to be in the room, with the real people who are being hidden by a song that someone ELSE didn't really sing or write! And I think Greenwheel fans are giving dj's a LOT of "heat", because dj's aren't saying who is behind Melissa's so-called "hit". SO..Greenwheel fans are ignoring Melissa and are in total support of a smaller, down to earth band, who are still standing.

Breathe is a very good song. She hasn't had a top 40 hit in like 5 years.

Please give it a rest already. Believe me, check out www.islandrecords.com/greenwheel/(message board) and you'll realize I'm not the only one not giving it a "rest". But anyway...

Her most underrated song is "Angels Would Fall," I love that song! Her best after "Come to My Window."

"Come To My Window" is classic! I even remember the video. "Isn't she the lesbian?" I would ask my sister.

I wouldn't say she's underrated overall, but she does deserve a bit more recognition than she's been getting.
As a songwriter I think she started out great but lately she's been repetitive. All her songs are virtually about her relationship.
However her voice is what defines her. She writes with the pure feminine romantic heart, yet she also has that Janis Joplin-esque masculinity to her vocals. "Bring Me Some Water" is the kick-butt example of that.
In the end, Melissa is certainly not overrated, though I wouldn't consider her underrated either. She's about right where she should be.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
