So what do you all think of the guys possibly moving away from a hard-alternative sound to something more "etheral" and uptempo for the next album?
Is it a disaster in the making or welcome change?

Probably a disaster sales and reputation-wise, but I'd certainly be interested to hear it. BTH is a cool track.

I personally think the song is fantastic, but we'll have to see how radio reacts. I'm sure their fanbase will support it but will it get outside sales?

I'd say the radio performance of "Breaking The Habit" will be the harbinger of how their third project may be received.
And with a unique video to complement this single, it may indeed pay off.
Personally, I hope they don't go completely in this direction. Every one of their previous singles I gave D's and F's because they stubbornly leaned to the same generic gumbo, and it sounded unoriginal to begin with. And now for the first time ever I'm actually rooting for a Linkin Park single.
But if they design their whole third album as such, then it will only make me keep failing them again. I'm under the impression if this will indeed be the case, Linkin Park really doesn't love their job. Sacrifices and risk-taking is what brings spice to life, and music is no different.
That is exactly why I like "Breaking The Habit", only one of two moments where you exhibited exprimentation (the other being "My December") Chester and Co! Don't go screwing it all up!
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

That's my favorite song from Meteora, so if this is the kind of music I can expect from their next CD, I'll buy it right away. I do appreciate variety, though, so I hope it's not all one sound

I do appreciate variety, though, so I hope it's not all one sound I don't think they'll do an album full of "BTH" cause in the article they're saying they are not going to stop making songs that carry the trademark "Linkin Park" sound.

I wonder how alternative people will react to this, because Breaking The Habit sounds like a pure pop song to me (and a bloody great one at that).

Well they did say that they wnated to "push the envelope and challenge [them]selves creatively" so maybe that's a good sign. I really do hope this will be the case with the next album, I think LP have a lot potential but they're not going to reach it if they keep making the same songs/albums over and over again.

I don't think it would give them disaster sales. You've got to think about it. Everyone's still buying Linkin Park albums, so regardless of how it sounds, it's gonna debut at #1 just like Meteora did. If I heard something from them that I liked enough, I might go out and buy an album from them, but that hasn't been the case just yet. I think it's okay to make your signature sound, but what's wrong with expanding upon it? Also, even slightly less vague songwriting would prevent them from the easy burnout that they get with every one of their singles. Also, if I hear something more original, I'll like it better. Still, they remind me of a mainstream Deftones.
