Curious as to the thinking of various singer/songwriters regarding whether they start a solo career or form a band. Always wondered the psychology behind it. Someone like Rob Thomas could have launched a solo career after Tabitha's Secret folded. In fact, reviewers always seem to call MB20 "the Rob Thomas show". But he preferred and insisted on forming another band. Someone like John Mayer has had great success solo. (Was he ever in a band previously?). Is it just the comfort level, you think? What's your thoughts on it??

Well, I'm not quite sure.
As it is with some bands ;) the lead singer gets the attention and it's as if he/she is THE BAND.
Perhaps it's that the lead singer/artist feels a lot more comfortable working in a group enviornment. That's not to say that they can't go it alone, but sometimes I guess it just depends on what you're comfortable with.

If the person can make more money by going solo, then more power to them.

I think it depends on the situation. I can't imagine Bono being as successful as U2 has been had he gone solo, yet I also can't imagine the Commodores having the success Lionel Richie had as a solo artist either.
I think as long as the band is helping to make the songs better, it's better to stay in a band. If the band is holding someone back it's better to go solo.

I personally prefer bands or vocal groups. My favorite songs have always been mostly from bands or groups. Hearing the last 4 AI contestants (all female) do an En Vogue song made me think they ought to form a vocal group together.
I'm always saddened when a favorite band or group of mine breaks up, or their lead singer goes solo. Lionel Richie was very good solo, but even better with the Commodores. The Commodores were at their peak when Lionel left. I wished he had done as Phil Collins of Genesis, alternate between solo and group projects. The same with Sting and the Police.
