Sure he is responsible for Whtiney Houston and running Arista records when it was successful....but as of late it seems that he has lost his ability to make hit artists???
A few of his acts have really under performed under his supervision but the bad part about it is they all had potential to do great and better things.
Deborah Cox - her last effort was a dissapointment by all accounts. She has one of the best voices around but what is happening with her career?
Monica-although she is rebounding with "u shoulda known better" J Records made some foul decisions in regards to her promotion and single release and timing......which leads me to Wyclef.
Wyclef had 3 singles from an album that did not even come close to scanning what Monica did her first week in a month but yet he has 3 singles that flopped BACK TO BACK!!!! But yet Monicas singles were released so far apart I cant even recall the dates.
Tyreese- One of the better male r&b singers and he really is not doing much although he had a r&b hit with "how you gonna act liek that" but he has the voice to have Usher type succes but he barely has any at all.
Mario- One hit wonder??
So I guess the question is, do you think Clive Davis is still the man to go to for a successful career? Do u think he is just very over-rated and got lucky with scoring artists like Whitney?

He may have fallen off a little bit lately but from the 60's to the 90's, no one competed with this man.

Seems like he has gotten lazy and hasnt put the same effort into artists like he did with Whitney and Others.

The industry is in such a sad state for talent and good material, I'm sure he just doesn't have the energy and drive for it.

Clive really doesn't have it anymore in my opinion. He did at one time, but he's a little out of touch I think.

No one can have a 100% success rate. Match him up to any other executive as far as careers go, and he blows everyone else away easily.

He's still one of the best, just not flawless. Yes, Mario's a one hit wonder, Wyclef's album underperformed but he's never been much of a singles artist... Deborah Cox can't seem to make it outside of Dance music anymore. As for Monica, I feel her case reveals Clive's inattention. The success she's had with this third album is almost entirely due to Missy Elliott and Monica herself-- Missy for some strong material and Monica for her sheer star quality and vocals.
Alicia Keys is of course the biggest exception, she's doing awesome, and I feel like Clive pampers her beyond any other artist. She seems to be the only one he spends the time on that he should. He may do it for Fantasia now, though.

In my opinion, Clive Davis is given too much credit for Santana's Supernatural. The concept to have guest artists may have been his idea, but the actual work of picking the songs and the artists was left to others. Rob Thomas was brought on board by an EMI executive and Eric Clapton approached Santana on his own to work on the album. He deserves credit for giving Santana another chance, but he got lucky with Supernatural. That album made him look like a genius, no matter what his actual role was in producing it.

I'm sorry, but Tyrese has to have one of the worst singing voices I've ever heard in popular music. "How You Gonna Act Like That" is the biggest piece of overproduced crap that's been out in a long time!!!

I hear that Clive Davis wasn't happy that RCA was stuck with the deal to sign American Idols, and that he inherited it when he took over RCA. Of course, if you ask him, he'll take all the credit for the successes Clarkson, Studdard, Aiken, and Fantasia have had since. Remember, though, that he was also executive producer of the Justin Guarini album.

Well, Clive seems to be doing well with Maroon5. I don't think he signed them but he is obviously promoting them to the max. I think this group might want to take it easy. Overexpose is looming right around the corner. As a new band you do need to get your name and music out there but they have already been on two soundtracks and remixed This Love with Kayne West. I'm not a person who goes around yelling "sell out" but M5 are really riding that line with me. We'll see if this band is able to have a career after the teenyboppers drop off the band wagon (ie MB20).
