I'm wondering if Maroon 5 is eligible for a best new band Grammy this year? Saw that FOW got a nomination last year which seemed so odd. M5 is definitely hot right now. I was listening to Songs About Jane this morning and it really is an excellent album. Do you think any of the current singles will get nominated?

I wouldn't be against it, but I don't know whether they'll get any noms or not.
Their album is very good. I think maybe it's too old.

I definitely think they got snubbed last year. The nominations that were given to Fountains of Wayne should have gone to Maroon5.
Thanks, Ben

Maroon 5 is eligible for best new artist and for any of their singles from the album.
The album is too old and isn't eligible.

Even if not New Artist, then certainly Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Pop Vocal Group of the Year would be worthy nominations.

Well, 3/4 of the eligibility year is over, and I think I have a clear idea of who will be in and who will be out. I would love feedback, but nothing too negative please! For some categories, I can't think of five nominees. I have them ordered from who I think is the frontrunner as being number 1 and so on. And I didn't post anything that hasn't been released yet (like Gwen Stephani) Album of The Year 1. "Van Lear Rose" - Loretta Lynn 2. "Diary of Alicia Keys" - Alcia Keys 3. "College Dropout" - Kayne West 4. "Confessions" - Usher 5. "Sunrise" - Norah Jones 6. "Muscioloty" - Prince 7. "The Black Album" - Jay Z I think being the most critically acclaimed album of the year is going to work for Loretta. The comeback did sell amazingly, but it was by no means a flop. So I like her chances to win. Kayne would have been number two, but the buzz around his album is dying, the hype isn't what it used to be. It should still be good enough for a nomination. Alicia Keys still has her magic, and I think if any one of the commercial successes is going to come in and win this year, it will be hers. Two huge singles are going for her. Norah will get in here just because of who she is. I don't think she has any chance of winning. I wouldn't be surprised to see her walk away totally empty handed this year. "Confessions" is just to huge to be denied this year "although I though that about 50 Cent last year. I think Usher is a safe bet though. Jay Z released the best album of his career, and "99 Problems" is sure to be the album's biggest hit. I think the song might peak at just the right time. Record of the Year1. "If I Ain't Got You" - Alicia Keys 2. "My Immortal" - Evanescence 3. "This Love" - Maroon Five 4. "All Falls Down" - Kayne West 5. "You Don't Know My Name" - Alicia Keys 6. "Everytime" - Britney Spears 7. "Yeah" - Usher 8. "Roses" - Outkast Two nominations for Alicia may seem like overkill, but when you think of it, who else is there really? A double nomination has happened in the not do distant past. If I had to choose one Alicia song, I go with "If I Ain't Got You" It's a much better vocal performance, and it's fresher. I put Usher as my second spolier, but in such a weak year, it could find himself among the frontrunners. Though it's not the quality, this song is definitely last year "Crazy in Love" (which was robbed blind last year). I love "My Immortal" but does anyone else think it's too old to stand a chance? Evanescence got more than their share last year. Same with Outkast. I think this is a pretty safe bet for Alicia. Song of the Year 1. "You Don't Know My Name" - Alicia Keys 2. "If I Ain't Got You" - Alicia Keys 3. "My Immortal" - Evanescence 4. "Portland, Oregon"- Loretta Lynn 5. "Everytime" - Britney Spears This is a hard category to predict. Unlike "Record of the Year" though, it would come as a complete shock if Alicia WASN'T nominated twice in this category.
Best New Artist 1. Joss Stone 2. Maroon Five 3. Gretchen Wilson 4. Kayne West 5. Tamyra Gray 6. Nellie McKay 7. Fantasia (she dropped the Barrino) Nellie McKay is a lock to win BNA, next year. She's a unique talent that the NARAS voters would normally go crazy for, but she has absolutely no support, not even a big grassroot following. Susan Tedsechi in 2000 was even more popular. If you look at the last ten winners (hell, even include last years win for Amy Lee) and Joss is clearly in front of this race. The hype is continuing to build for her. Kayne is a rapper, so I doubt a win. In order for a country artist to get a nomination, the whole country industry will have to vote for one artist. This year they will. Gretchen is good for a nomination. Oh, and I put Fantasia on my list because I love her and she is fabulous! But really, I'm not ready to list her in any way as a serious contender, BUT, I also think it's too soon to count her completely out yet.

I didn't know that Maroon5 wasn't submitted last year for the Grammy's. Thanks for the correction ;).
About your nominees, I really am not sure if I can agree with a lot of them. I don't see Britney Spears's "Everytime" in Song or Record of the Year. Maybe if it blows up I can see it in Record of the Year, but right now I think "Toxic" has a better chance. In Album of the Year I see too many hip-hop and R&B albums, but that's also what is really big right now, so some of those nominations wouldn't shock me (i.e. Usher and Kanye West). I wouldn't be surprised if Jay-Z got a nomination because it is his "last album." I hope not to see as much Alicia as you have either. Neither of the two songs she has released have come close in caliber to "Fallin'." All the other nominations you have seem about right. Good job, bud :).
Thanks, Ben

Kanye West will not be up for anything. You're joking right? He's been the most critically acclaimed rapper this year, and he's also been the most successful (so far). His album is still top 15 and about to break 3 X platinum. If they can put 50 Cent in this category, they can put a MUCH better rapper in the category as well. Not to mention he'll get a lot of nods in the rap category.
