How do tours mainly help sales out? Is it because they sell the albums at the shows? Or do those sales not count? Or is it because when someone comes to a certain town their songs get played a lot there? Also, about how much do tours boost someone's sales? Thanks for any information. :) -Josh

I've never seen a tour send an album shooting up the chart (save Prince, but that's a new scenario). They may help an album stabilize, but not send it flying up the chart.
Sales from concerts do count towards SoundScan though.

I always hear that too, but I have never seen a tour make a major difference in album sales either. It maybe helps some. Anymore with the high price of concerts, you generally know the artists material before you go. It wasn't always that way.

Exactly, for most of these major artist who would be worried about sales, they're charging around $100 for a decent ticket so you'd probably have the album if you were interested in it. Though I could see someone going to see Madonna's concert and having no interest in "American Life" but then they wouldn't buy it after the show anyway.

yeah I mean, basically they don't help that much because it's really unlikely that someone would go to a concert if they didn't already have the corresponding album. they MIGHT. but even if they did, even less would then go buy the album.
i think it makes a bigger difference then for the opening acts, because they could be someone you haven't even heard of, or barely know; and if they impress you then you may get the album.
main reason for the tour i think is b/c it makes the most money for the artist.

Didn't N'SYNC get sent back out on tour in early 2002 for the "Celebrity" album to get excess units off the shelves? I remember they had that HUGE summer stadium tour in 2001 but the album hadn't sold as well as expected and they went out on a smaller "more intimate" outing (to make up).

I don't think that tours necessarily boost sales, but they do try to keep sales steady as TCorey mentioned.

I agree with TCorey also... HBO specials usually will help also... Janet's AFY album sold a lot of units the week after her show aired on HBO. Other than that, I don't feel they will have much effect.
