I've been hearing some terms regarding music and bands lately that I wanted some background on. Particularly "old school" and "garage band". Anyone know the genesis of these terms and the definition? Have these terms changed definitions over time? Can you name bands that would fit each definition? Thanks!

I believe an example of a garage band would be The White Stripes.

Garage band refers to raw, largely unproduced, rife with feedback sometimes, sound. The raw guitar crunching that you find with some bands make them garage sounding. The best example of a band with a contract called a garage band was The Replacements. They really did sound like a garage band jamming out. Raw energy, music filled with mistakes even.
Old School on the other hand, definitely has changed meaning over the years. It depends on what you refer to. Old School for rap means something different than old school for rock for instance.
I think these days when they say "Old School" they refer to bands that have a late 60's early 70's vibe, such as Jet, The Datsuns, The D4, The Greenhornes, The Strokes, The Vines, and on and on.
When I think of Old School, I think of The Who, The Rolling Stones etc. I personally think bands that are old school are more like Rooney, but hey, I'm not sure others would agree with me.

I suppose by these definitions, some Old School Garage Bands would be the Kingsmen, the Standells, the Music Explosion, the Electric Prunes, Cannibal & the Headhunters...
When I think of old school, I think in terms of soul, like Motown, Stax, the Philadelphia sound, Aretha, Al Green, EW&F...
