What do you think of this statement?
"I dislike every song where the lead singer of the group writes the songs because you don't let actors write the movie scripts, do you?"
Also from an economic viewpoint, it makes sense for people to specialize though. When singing and songwriting are done by separate people, then both groups are more likely to excel in their area of expertise.

That has to be one of the stupidest comments I have ever heard. ...and that's exactly what I'd expect in an industry oversaturated with throwaway studio artists.

Look at whitney. she was successful for years and i dont think she ever wrote a lyric. Writing is a talent and singing is a talent....they are separate and dont have to go hand in hand.

They dont have to-but saying you will hate any song that the singer writes? Thats just silly. Some people CAN do both and do them both well.

I agree... just as there are some actors (certainly not many, but some) who are successful writing their own screenplays. You certainly can't judge every song/artist with a blanket statement.

Sorry, I misquoted. Here's the original sentence. Favorite music: "anything that doesn't involve the singer of the group writing their own songs. i mean come on, u don't let the actors write the movie do you???" So he's not saying he hates singer-songwriters, but just the opposite. His favorites just don't happen to include singer-songwriters. I don't agree (just look at my personal chart.) But really, if you think about it, most singer-songwriters don't sing very well.

I wont hate every song a singer writes but I dont feel everyone needs to write songs. Some singers are good at it and thats great...some suck at it and need to stop.

I like it when artists write their own music. But there are plenty of songwriters who write great songs yet have no desire to sing them. That' when you need people like Christina Aguilera with amazing voices to sing those songs.
Some people are good at both.

It's different with music. I'd rather an artist write music that they're going to be performing, then using someone else's. Go TLC!

That is a very biased comment, there are many great singer-songwriters, some of the greatest songs of music history have been written or co-written by the singer(s). It can be like a whole other level of depth and sincerity in the music when it's written by the one singing.

I feel great admiration for those musicians who can sing and play instruments as well as write their songs. But I don't agree with those who look down on musicians who sing songs others write. It is too much to expect that every musician should be able to write good songs. So if a band or singer can't write good songs, then they should look elsewhere for a song. A songwriter who can't sing or play instruments well needs a good band or singer to sing and play their song. But if you have the talent to do both, all the better.
