I second Bjork. No has ever or will ever be able to make the kind of music she makes.
Also, Kate Bush. Fused 80's with pop/rock/folk/celtic/ and whatever else she felt like throwing in there. Completely original.

Yeah, no one....EVER... will be able to do a good job of emmulating what Bjork has done.
As for Kate bush, she was the Tori Amos before Tori Amos was Tori Amos.

Exactly. And now Tori Amos has artists being compared to her but no one will ever be able to hold a candle to the music she makes. Kate and Tori are similar in so many ways, but their differences are large enough to put each of them in a league of their own.

New Order and Depeche Mode for creating and/or jump-starting techno and house, respectively.

Well, it can't really be said that New Order started techno. When Ian Curtis was still alive and New Order was Joy Division, Curtis was playing Kraftwerk records to the other three members. Hence, New Order probably wouldn't have gone in the direction they did if they didn't listen to Kraftwerk. No one really knows, but its food for thought.

Who is considered the "father" of rap? That certainly was an original genre. Never thought it would catch on, actually. LOL! Still would never actually buy an album, but have grown to appreciate its rhythms and emotion. Don't particularly like how women are portrayed by some rap artists though. Well, rock 'n' roll music never portrayed women respectfully too. ;) As for who's considered the father of rap. In terms of speech, there are these three: *Gil-Scott Heron *The Last Poets *Leon Thomas Although they did something far more approaching spoken-word, the way they talked about social issues was very influencial to bands like Public Enemy, KRS-ONE and the like. But if you are talking about the mysoginistic side of things, then look no further than... a comedian! That's right! Rudy Ray Moore (aka Dolemite) had a speech and flow in his routines that approached what was to become rap. If you specifically want to talk about the musical side of things, one name stands above the rest: James Brown. It was with him that breakbeat came to life. Also, he's the most sampled artist of all time, including electronic/dance music. As for the guy that is considered the father of hip-hop, his name is Grandmaster Flash. He was a rapper and a DJ too, and considered the man who invented most of the techniques associated with turntablism and hip-hop producing.

Well, when you think about it, Puff Daddy didn't exactly break any ground for sampling other people's material either.
Some of the responses to this topic are horrible. Dripping with sarcasm, but horrible none the less.

LOL! A remix implies that its not original. I would have to say Michael Jackson and Prince.

I would have to say Michael Jackson and Prince. I don't think there's anything left on Michael that's original. Oh wait, we're talking about his music...
