What covers do you think were done minus the crappy?
Here's what I think.
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd) Foo Fighters - Have a Cigar (Pink Floyd) Failure - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) Matthew Good Band - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again (Depeche Mode) Girls Against Boys - She's Lost Control (Joy Division The Tea Party - Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones) Sarah McLachlan - Dear God (XTC) Gary Jules & Michael Andrews - Mad World (Tears For Fears) Quicksand - How Soon Is Now? (The Smiths) Stabbing Westward - Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order) Moby - That's When I Reach For My Revolver (Mission Of Burma) Catherine Wheel - That's When I Reach For My Revolver (Mission Of Burma) A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure) Deftones - The Chauffer (Duran Duran) Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush) Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days (Led Zepplen) Snapcase - Mountain Song (Jane's Addiction)
That's what I can think of at the moment.

A recent one that comes to mind is 311's "Love Song", which I thought was better than the original.
You mentioned New Order which made me think of "Bue Monday"...Orgy's version was just awesome..
Some other ones: Guns N Roses - "Knocking On Heaven's Door" originally by Bob Dylan...GNR did a lot of good covers Nirvana - "The Man Who Sold The World", originally by David Bowie Cake - "I Will Survive", originally by Gloria Gaynor (LMAO...surprisingly, I actually like this song and I can't stand the original) Limp Bizkit - "Faith", originally by George Michael Alien Ant Farm - "Smooth Criminal", originally by Michael Jackson Marilyn Manson - "Tainted Love", originally by Soft Cell (apparenty the lead singer of the band was in some motorcycle accident a few days ago and is in the hospital with serious head injuries.)

coverd brillinatly by the Dixie Chicks

Here are some covers that I think are better than the originals. Pretty much because they were originally done by great songwriters with crappy voices.
Guns N Roses - "Knocking On Heaven's Door" (originally by Bob Dylan) John Mellencamp - "Wild Night" (orginally done by Van Morrison) The Byrds - "Mr. Tamborine Man" (another Dylan song) Rod Stewart - "Downtown Train" (originally done by Tom Waits) Real McCoy - "Come & Get Your Love" (originally done by Redbone)

I Want You is a stunning, dramatic cover of the Marvin Gaye classic.
Many of Elvis' classics actually were recorded by someone else before he made them his own.
Whitney Houston also has made several covers her own- her best not being I Will Always Love You (which she does fine with), but Saving All My Love For You. Also did decent jobs with Greatest Love of All, All the Man That I Need. And let's not foget The Star Spangled Banner. ;)

Marilyn Manson - "Tainted Love", originally by Soft Cell (apparenty the lead singer of the band was in some motorcycle accident a few days ago and is in the hospital with serious head injuries.) Actually, it was originally done by Gloria Jones. Soft Cell covered it, and then Marilyn Manson.

311 - Love Song. No Doubt - It's My Life. Toby Lightman - Real Love. Sheryl Crow - The First Cut Is The Deepest. Christina Aguilera - Car Wash. Britney Spears - My Prerogative.
Can't think of any more for now...

Sinead O'connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince) Cyndi Lauper - When You Were Mine (Prince) Chaka Khan - I Feel For You (Prince) Bangles - Manic Monday (Prince)
Even though Manic Monday and Nothing Compares 2 U were not in any Prince albums by the time these covers were done, there were recordings that Prince had done as demos and bootlegs. Nothing Compares 2 U was given to another group in the mid 80s before being recorded by Sinead.

Orgy-Blue Monday(New Order) The Ataris-Boys Of Summer(Don Henley) William Hung-She Bangs(Ricky Martin) Sheryl Crow-Sweet Child O'Mine(Guns N'Roses) Marilyn Manson-Sweet Dreams(Eurythmics) Vanessa Carlton-Paint It Black(Rolling Stones) With the exception of Marilyn Manson's cover, the rest is pure trash. Well, I haven't heard Vanessa's cover of "Paint It Black", but I'm pretty sure it sucks.
