I wouldn't go so far as to say it sucks, but Paint It Black is suppost to be a balls to the wall sonic blast of a song and I don't see how Vanessa Carlton could pull that off. Its just not her. As for the Tea Party though, that's a beautiful version of Paint It Black if there ever was one.

Aretha Franklin "Respect" (Otis Redding) Turtles "It Ain't Me Babe" (Bob Dylan) Jay & the Americans "This Magic Moment" (Drifters) Smith "Baby, It's You" (Shirelles) Isaac Hayes "Walk On By" (Dionne Warwick) Andy Kim "Baby, I Love You" (Ronnettes) Diana Ross "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell) Vanilla Fudge "You Keep Me Hanging On" (Supremes) Gladys Knight & The Pips "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (Marvin Gaye -- this could go either way; I understand that Gaye recorded it first, but the Pips released it first. I love both versions) Tremeloes "Silence Is Golden" (4 Seasons) Hollies "Bus Stop" (Herman's Hermits) Turtles "You Showed Me" (Byrds) Rose-Colored Glass "Can't Find The Time" (Orpheus) Grassroots "The River Is Wide" (Forum) Terry Stafford "Suspicions" (Elvis Presley)
The last 6 songs were songs where I never heard the original, or the original wasn't released as a single (other than as a B side). I think there were many such songs in the '60's and '70's. There are a few good covers in recent years, but none that come to mind now, and good, creative remakes are not nearly as numerous today as they were 30-40 years ago (which is not to say there aren't many covers today; we're drowning in them right now).

When the hell did Powderfinger cover that? I'm trying to get a grasp on how Brenard would possibly sing that. Are you a Powderfinger fan! :o It was a b side to a recent single, he slows it down, not bad actually...

Considering that I own Double Allergic, Internationalist, Odyssey Number Five and am awaiting the U.S. release of Vulture Street, I'm sure I'm a bigger fan than most on the board. Are you a Powderfinger fan! :o It was a b side to a recent single, he slows it down, not bad actually...

I think that one of my favourite covers of all time is the Barenaked Ladies version of "Lovers In A Dangerous Time," a song originally done by Bruce Cockburn.
Others that I love:
10,000 Maniacs, "Because The Night" (Patti Smith) Cake, "I Will Survive" (Gloria Gaynor) Johnny Cash, "Hurt" (Nine Inch Nails) Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen) Smashing Pumpkins, "Landslide" (Fleetwood Mac)
