Ok so I've been watching some live performances of Kelly's songs on youtube (SUBG, BTHE and BOY mostly), and on every one she NEVER hits those high notes you hear in her songs.
in SUBG: you never hear her sing the high note on third "again" when she sings "again and again and again" and usually she has to strain really hard to hit those notes during the bridge (MTV VMA peformance).
in BTHE: She NEVER sings the high note on "anymore" when she sings "no i don't cry on the outside anymore" and she NEVER does those really high ad libs on the the 2nd to last chorus on "I'VE CRIIIIIIIIED".
in BOY: She's NEVER done the key change, which is my favorite part of the song simply because I think the key change is way too high for her voice.
This has brought me to the conclusion that while I am a HUGE Kelly fan, she simply isn't actually hitting those notes in the studio.

She used to hit them live, from what I remember... lately though..

She used to hit them on American Idol, and I *have* heard her do the BOY key change.
I think a lot of singers tend to do their songs in a slightly lower range so they don't blow out their voices from tons of touring and live performances.

I myself have heard her do it on all three of those songs but as I said no lately. I agree, if Kelly did it each time, would she still have a voice, with how much she sings now.

Kelly has at one time hit all those notes you mentioned in concert.
I like the BTHE low note better than the high note, but I don't like the BOY version that isn't the key change version. I can understand why she does that though. She doesn't want to ruin her voice.

Kelly can hit the notes, but only in moderation. Her singing style is very rough on the vocal cords so its only going to be every now and the that she's going to attempt those notes. It can be disappointng for a fan who hears those notes on the recording but she isn't able to do them in concert.

Thats why these young female singers have to be very careful about their voice early on. Too much performing early in the career can be disasterous. Did Christina A. go through a period where her voice became very rough?

I know a lot of Kelly's first performances of Since U Been Gone she was able to hit that "again" note...and I know on the MTV Live Acoustic performance of Behind these Hazel Eyes she hits the "anymore" note...and I have never heard her do the key change in Because of You Live.

Kelly can do all those notes and more. If I had some time I'd find the videos for you.
In fact, I'm gonna PM doc with a link to this thread to see if he can provide some info since he was with her in the studio for SUBG and BTHE.

Just for the fact that she doesn't lyp them like other singers speaks a lot about herself :)
I know she can hit those notes but it's better if she rest her voice, and remember she's been touring this whole past year ;)

If anybody could find those specific videos that would contradict what I said in that post, please post them or PM them to me, thanks.
BTW I just took a look at her MTV VMA performance and it was...bad . A couple of you say she doesn't want to strain her voice too much so she only does those high notes occasionally. Well the MTV VMA performance was one of those cases where she did hit the notes... but she didn't hit those notes very nicely. She hit a G, which is the higest note in SUBG and it was very very rough, and throughout the performance she was screaming a lot. Her recording of SUBG makes me think that she can hit those higher notes with a lot more ease, but the MTV VMA performance just showcased how much her songs strain her voice.

I think the VMA was more of her just having fun and going with the theme of the awards. www.youtube.com/?v=WdMEi2Tl-Ek^^ Thats SUBG at the Tsunami concert.

^ Regardless of whether she was having fun or not, it was clear that she was straining to hit those notes. But I do like that Tsunami concert performance.

Kelly said at the VMAs that she was going for a "Janis Joplin vibe" (Kelly's words). She didn't want to perform the same song everyone could hear on the album so she changed it up to make it more ROCK to match the audience and event. Those that were looking for a Celine Dion type of performance were probably disappointed, but a lot of others called it the performance of the night. Heck, Damian on MTV called it his favorite performance of 2005. So that performance was a matter of perception.

My girlfriend said she's seen Kelly perform on recent concerts on TV and she said Kelly's voice has started to crack. This was a while back though.

Who's expected to sing the chorus too? Me along with other people. She does it all the time of this song and her others but wasn't this not in america. SNL and on, of SUBG, I remmeber, she did a new version of it where she didn't use a backing track.

Hey everyone. I was kinda thinking that maybe it was one or more of her BACKUP singers on the album hitting a couple of those notes. Any thoughts?? Or maybe she sings backup herself separately and they layer it in when they mix the song? I don't know all the technical terms, but maybe that's it. Have a nice night! I still like her, though.

Clarkson sings all her own back up vocals and harmonies. She can and does hit the notes when she is rested and inspired. Clarksons preferance to sing "live" in concerts and on high profile TV performances without backup singers puts ALL the pressure on her single voice to carry songs layered (in their recorded versions) with 2, 3, or 4, harmony and adlib tracks. Listen carefully to the background vocals on the recorded versions - they're as good as her lead vocals and much more complex.

She has the most obvious (IMO) backing track during the chorus. She still sounded amazing though. Yep, the backing track was clear and they probably turned it up a little bit on the "again and again and again!!!!!!" part. You have a million chances in the studio to get a note right. I think a lot of bands and artists make the mistake of singing something too demanding in the studio and then when they try to perform it live, they realize they can't do it consistently. There is also autotune to help correct pitch. I found a video of the VMA performance. www.youtube.com/w/Kelly-Clarkson---Since-You%27ve-Been-Gone?v=giMrch46lg0&search=kelly%20clarkson%20sinceWhat on earth was the "since you been gone......" at the end of the first chorus?!?

^ Personally I like how she's changed the note to go high and holds it. It sort of goes with the blase' attitude of parts of the song.
the interesting part about Kelly's vocals is that she recorded "Breakaway," "Gone" and "You Found Me" all on the same day. So I don't think she took too much time to get those particular notes "just right."

The backing track was necessary to an extent because Kelly did all her own background vocals on the record, which is impossible to replicate live. It wasn't a full vocal track however; it only had the background vocals on it. Some other appearances (and the tours) had her with background singers, so the track wasn't necessary then.
I think there was SOME use of Pro-Tools on Kelly's album, because these days it's practically used on almost everything and it's convenient for who is recording, but not more than anyone else, and probably a LOT less than a lot of other people. I doubt there was much, if any, pitch correction used. The few live performances that have been subpar are probably more due to her voice getting tired and stressed out after working so hard, touring and doing TV performances.

I think she should have enough money now to afford backup vocalists. :) Well said. My previous comments might have seemed a little negative, so don't get me wrong, Kelly can sing... Definitely better than many of the pop stars. I haven't heard the whole album so I won't comment too much. But from what I've heard, it doesn't sound like her voice has been pitch corrected much. I don't usually listen to her songs very closely, but I can usually hear the autotune pretty quickly.

Who's expected to sing the chorus too? unless your ass is dancing, i dont see why not, or if not, get some back up singers to sing it for you.

SHE specifically chooses NOT to use back up singers. She wants her live concert show to be ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC, her, her voice, and her 6 piece band. I think her reasons are because she doesn't want to put on a complex, contrived show full of smoke and mirrors - just her, her band, and the music - no dancers, no fireworks, nothing but kick a$$ music. Thats what Kelly Clarkson is all about. Her concerts are a non-stop barrage of vocal fireworks - I've never been to any other performers concert where the vocalist works any harder, faster, or performs any better. She rocks your sox and thats what she wants you to take away from her concerts.

That's a good point, but I think backup singers are different from dancers or pyro. If anything they actually would make the show even more real, since there would be no prerecorded music involved at all. I think she used backing singers on her last tour.
