A CNN program has confirmed this will be the fourth (and final) single from "X&Y".
Originally "The Hardest Part" was slated to be the fourth single, but overwhelming demand among fans to have this track released has appeared to set place this change of plans.
I for one believe although "The Hardest Part" would make the band's most radio-friendly single to date, "White Shadows" would far more likely keep their listeners seduced, as even strong Coldplay fans are not exactly thrilled of "The Hardest Part".
Plus, with the way "Talk" is currently crossing over from Alternative as it is, it is shaping to be their next crossover hit and would complicate the fullest potential of "The Hardest Part" in the process. "White Shadows", meanwhile, is just the track that can keep the band nested right at home on Alternative.
My Predictions:
Alternative: #13 (slow rise, slow fall) Triple A: #2 Hot AC: #32 CHR/Pop: Will Not Chart
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Although it should have been the second single, I'm pleased that it's eventually going to be released nevertheless. I never understood all the love for "The Hardest Part." It's a decent song but I think it's highly overrated by some and I'm glad they canned it.

Yes! I love this song and was hoping it'd get a release. I'm crossing my fingers they get the green light on a 5th single and choose "Square One."

Hmm i prefer 'The Hardest Part' it's even my favourite song off their album along with 'Speed of sound'. But 'White Shadows' is a great single choice too, i like this song.

I think this is a great choice of a single for a few reasons.
A. Hopefully Talk will carry momentum on Hot AC and even crossover to POP for success. B. White Shadows will continue to keep their Alternative fanbase, for what I believe, their next album to be their "Joshua Tree". C. Perhaps it wouldn't be the worst idea to release the Hardest Part to Hot AC and White Shadows to Alternative simutaneously....I think a lot of non-Coldplay fans, or those who don't have X&Y would be surprised by The Hardest Part and that song could find success for Coldplay.

Pop radio is too in love with hip hop for that to happen anytime soon. I think Coldplay may be at the peak of their success on that format.

Weren't A Rush Of Blood To The Head AND X & Y supposed to be the next Joshua Tree?
Is Chris Martin hiring people to talk to music review magazines and flat-out lie to them or are Coldplay really this overrated/overhyped?
That said, I've given this two listens and I really like it. I guess Coldplay will never do another song as hard as "Shiver", which is a shame (not that "Shiver" was necessarily hard, but by their standards it was). Another "Shiver" would have fitten these guys nicely following "Speed of Sound". I'm still not surprised they've been able to rebound following "Fix Me", considering they are the biggest band nowadays.

True, but my bad for not clarifying earlier. I meant released singles.

True, but my bad for not clarifying earlier. I meant released singles. "Shiver" was indeed released as a single, though it didn't do anything on this side of the Atlantic. A few Alternative and Triple A played it in-between the releases of "Yellow" and "Trouble", but I don't recall it making any chart impact, which if it did it was in the lower echelons of both formats. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I remember it peaking in the mid to lower 20's on Alternative.

Shiver peaked at #26 on the billboard chart, 2 spots higher than Trouble.
