Ok, so right now billboard.com is showing the top 5 for every year end chart since 1955 for both singles and albums..
Makes me wish I have a subscription so I can see the entire chart.
Ive always had my doubts about the certification of the "Sound of Music". Alot of unofficial charts cite it has sold over 35million worldwide. Without sounding like a biased fan, I have no doubt in my mind it has, if not more or close to.
Problem is the certification on billboard is only GOLD which is due to RCA not certifying higher, although the claim is that it has sold 11 million in the USA alone.
I went on today and noticed in the year end sales charts for albums the Sound of Music finished No3 in 65, No1 in 66, and top 5 in 67!
Yet only certified gold! So this is surely enough proof it has sold 11million in US.
The same goes for My Fair Lady Soundtrack...it features in 4 year end charts from 1955 to 1966 ! Yet only certified as 3million copies... Is this Billboards shoddy work or the record companies for not paying for certification?
According to the Herald Sun ( newspaper ) Hit Magazine in Australia - ( and this is regarding our aussie charts )
"even more interesting than all this is this excerpt below which talks about a movie close to my heart- and apparently the biggest selling musical soundtrack of all time - The Sound Of Music.
"These are the 50 albums that have spent 10 or more weeks at Number 1 in the past 41yrs.
On top is an album that never spawned a significant single, yet everybody knows the songs.
The Sound of Music Soundtrack was the fourth album to reach number 1 in Australia and whent back to the top spot 8 times. It initially spent 21 weeks at No1 and its last run was for 24 weeks."
The sound of Music has spent a whopping 76 weeks at Number 1- placing it in pole position for longest stint ever for an album.
2nd place goes to Brothers in Arms Dire Straits with 34 weeks.
3rd place to Beatles with SGT pepper at 30 weeks.
Interestingly only three albums reached number 1 from 1967-1969 as The Sound Of Music, Going Places by Herp Alpert, Beatles Sgt Pepper, White Album and Abbey Road dominated for 3 years!
Now I know chart date is pretty sketchy for albums as far back as the 60's but I believe I read that the Sound Of Music has sold nearly 15million in the US alone and an estimated 35million total worldwide.
As its a Soundtrack as is the case with Grease and Saturday Night Fever which are all around the same mark, it rarely is listed in ALL TIME polls.
If these All time polls were collated correctly it would most certainly finish in the top 3 if not top 5.
I dont think we will ever see a return to those days. The market is way too disposable now.
