(Nashville, TN) I knew something was up when I heard "I Hate Myself For Loving You" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on WMAK, (formerly Oldies 96.3) which became 96-3 Jack FM on 5-12-05. Today, Star 97 which had been Hot AC (and 80's from 9-01 to Spring '03) flipped to 60's/70's oldies.
The new Jack station is pretty good. I've heard songs I haven't heard in years. They're running jockless and commercial-free for now. I don't really miss Star 97--they were becoming more and more like 102-5 The Party and 107.5 The River (both chr/pop) everyday.
Some of the songs that Jack is playing: Surrender-Cheap Trick, Le Freak-Chic, Soak Up The Sun-Sheryl Crow, You Spin Me Round-Dead or Alive, and they even threw in a few 60's oldies like Aretha Franklin's "Respect". Mainly, I'd say 80's pop/rock hits are getting the most airplay.

Before you know it, Jack will be in every major city. I was surprised to see that it was an oldies station that converted, since WMAK was doing pretty well in the ratings. But the same thing happened in Indianapolis, too. It was also a matter of time before Star 97 had to do something. How they lasted this long is a miracle from God.

They even slipped down into the 1. range, but kept going. I thought they'd do something with WNFN (Sports) because it's tanked to last place in the ratings, but I guess they'll keep their format.

Sports is a high-billing format, so depending on how much revenue they're making, a change in format may not be necessary.
