www.radioandrecords.com/Newsroom/2005_05_25/kiisgets.aspWednesday, May 25, 2005 KIIS Gets First Finish For First Time In 18 Years They may only be the first phase of the Spring 2005 Arbitron ratings, but Clear Channel's heritage CHR/Pop KIIS-FM/Los Angeles has done something it hasn't done since spring 1987: It's the No. 1 radio station in the nation's second-largest market. Clear Channel/L.A. VP/Programming John Ivey tells R&R he's "ecstatic" over the Phase One Arbitrends, which show KIIS and simulcast partner KVVS/Lancaster-Palmdale, CA rising 4.6-4.9 12+. "That's not just 'English-speaking' -- that's 'everybody-speaking,'" Ivey said in regard to KIIS's performance. "In the raw month of April, KIIS & KVVS are at a 5.3." Regional Mexican KLAX is second, with a 4.5 share. Ivey added that KIIS's cume for April was at 2.12 million, thus making it two out of the past four months where the station has seen its cume surpass the 2 million mark. Ivey said, "I know it's only a trend, but this is a real milestone for us; KIIS hasn't hit No. 1 12+ since I started here in 2001. This has been a great team effort -- every person in this building has been busting their humps to make this happen." When KIIS was last No. 1 in spring 1987, when it saw a 6.4-7.4 climb to dethrone then-No. 1 KPWR (Power 106), Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" was the No. 1 song on KIIS. The station's MD was Jack Silver, now PD at crosstown FM Talker KLSX. From me: Before KIIS/KVVS, KHTS San Diego (Market 17) was the biggest market I remember seeing with a CHR-Pop station in first.

This is certainly good news for the CHR/Pop format to have a #1 station in the nation's most competetive and closely-watched market.
Granted KIIS-FM isn't the great-sounding and mass-appeal CHR/Pop station it was back then, and has unquestionably lost millions of adult listeners since readjusting it's target demo to the 12-24 demo, but they need to be congratulated for getting back to #1.
With the notable exception of WNCI in Columbus Ohio, the vast majority of the CHR/Pop stations out there have really taken a dive since they started loading up on hard-core rap music in 1989.
KIIS-FM has managed to overcome that, which is no small feat in itself. However, given the dreary quality of radio stations here in LA, including an absolutely dreadful sounding oldies station and a so-so country stion, somebody HAD to be #1, and end Power 106's chance to match AC powerhouse KOST 103.5's streak of 12 straight books at #1, highlighted by an exceptional 8.0 in early 1992.
Power 106 had been #1 for 11 straight books.

They're too rhythmic now for my liking, but glad they're #1 again.
