Im sick of this song already and it doesnt go for adds yet. I have to listen to this album at my record store everytime I work. how this gets played on the same radio stations that play Slipknot, Mudvayne, Tool, Pearl Jam and other heavy rock bands is beyond me. stay off rock stations, thats what I say.

"Smiley Faces" is much more radio-friendly.

Crazy was freaking atrocious. I hope this doesn't get any air time, although sadly it will. It's true though, this doesn't fit in sandwiched between Slipknot and Tool.

I prefer the Violent Femmes version over this one.

Huh, here's an interesting link of a poor-quality video of the Raconteurs covering Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" at Lollapolooza. It's always weird to hear bands cover other (completely different sounding) bands at concerts. My personal favorite would have to be Sum 41's version of "How You Remind Me" at the MTV New Year Bash thingy back in 2001. youtube.com/watch?v=0PvF-k_eLcoIm sick of this song already and it doesnt go for adds yet. I have to listen to this album at my record store everytime I work. how this gets played on the same radio stations that play Slipknot, Mudvayne, Tool, Pearl Jam and other heavy rock bands is beyond me. stay off rock stations, thats what I say. Are many active-leaning stations actually playing Gnarls Barkley? I'd be shocked if they are. There seems to be quite a divide in the alt. format. My station would be on the entirely opposite end of the spectrum from those "loud" ones. Gnarls Barkley, to me, are really a novelty, and I know they don't seem that way to probably the majority of alt. listeners. Covering a Violent Femmes song is one thing, but releasing it as a follow-up to an enormous, if luckily successful, first single screams to me that they have nothing else to offer on the album. Which is actually good, because I personally want them to stay off the radio.

^ Hmm, "Smiley Faces" is doing well internationally. I don't know about their album, but besides this, they can definitely send that for adds. And I hope they will, over this.

It's true that it feels a bit off when sizing it up to heavy rock artists. But all the same I do believe Gnarls Barkley very much fits the mold of the "Alternative" label. Here, you also have Gorillaz succeeding, which is a hard-to-describe blend of rock, R&B, techno and other sounds, and when sizing it up to Gorillaz, I believe Gnarls Barkley is Alternative-worthy. Alternative can truly be an ironic format sometimes, I must admit, where I think by definition it is meant to be the anti-CHR/Pop format, or polar of Pop radio, yet you have artists like Nickelback and U2 still enjoying their moments here, which have broken through into mainstream. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Gnarls Barkley fits in at Alternative, no questions asked. And I don't think that a pop crossover necessarily makes a band not Alternative, although I definitely don't think Nickelback belongs here.
And I like this cover a lot. It doesn't stray too far from the original, but they add just enough of their own flavor to make it stand out.

I don't think that its really Gnarls Barkley's intention for this to be the second single as much as a bunch of stations said "ooh... hot violent femmes cover, play it".
I wouldn't be too surprised to see Smiley Faces be released eventually though.

And honestly, how many listeners unfamiliar with the Femmes would even know it was a cover unless you told them? I doubt most people under 20 are even familiar with the original.

I was gonna say that to think that most alternative programmers in 2006 would actually know that this was a Femmes cover just might be giving them a bit too much credit.

I can't speak for everyone under 20, but everyone I know would instantly recognize "Blister in the Sun" and would have probably heard "Gone Daddy Gone" at several points in their lives. That's not to say they don't know every '80s group, but definitely the Violent Femmes.

It's on All Access under Alternative. Guessing it might be going for adds soon.

WHTG is big on the Femmes. They play quite a few of their songs on a regular basis. Of course, I haven't heard the original version of "GDG" since they added the Gnarls Barkley version.

I would assume about half of the stations on the Alt. format play the Violent Femmes every now and then. Every Friday WPBZ has a 2 hour block of whatever song a listener wants to hear, and the Femmes are played just about every week with either Blister In The Sun or Gone Daddy Gone. I also have heard both on WOCL periodically.

I think I've never heard "Gone Daddy Gone" on the radio. When the Femmes are on my radio stations, it's "Blister" roughly 80% of the time, and "Add It Up" & "The Kiss-Off" 10% apiece. That's why I figured this was a fairly obscure cover, and that releasing it would be a respectable career move.

This is not a bad remake. This does deserve some Alternative airtime, you know.

I was gonna say that to think that most alternative programmers in 2006 would actually know that this was a Femmes cover just might be giving them a bit too much credit. but it's the same with any hip-hop or r&b song, where most people don't even know it's a sample, unless told. That doesn't stop radio stations from playing a song - especially from a current hot artist. It also helps that's it a good song, second to being a really good cover.

How did/is this song doing in the UK?According to wikipedia (I know, I couldn't find a better link), "Smiley Faces" is currently on its way up the U.K. singles charts. It's at #10 right now. Does anyone have any British albums info?

It's currently at #23 on both the UK Top 40 Singles and on the UK Airplay Chart. I believe it hit the top 10 in airplay, but for sales, I don't think it peaked in the top 10. Both having already peaked and now dropping.
As for "Gone Daddy Gone", it was never released there prior to the US; I haven't heard the next scheduled single for the UK/internationallly.

I agree. Actually, I think it's my favorite off their released singles.
