I could have sworn someone started a topic on this, but I searched and found nothing. ??? I don't know what else to say. It was a struggle making it through this song. I've never felt this way about any band, but his vocals are nearly unbearable. I guess it's just a talent issue, and the fact that it is unoriginal makes it even worse. That said, I doubt it hits top 50. My station (and other lighter alt. stations) may play this five or six times a week, maximum. I think I've had enough She Wants Revenge to last a lifetime, thank you very much. If that makes me bipolar for starting this topic, then so be it. I honestly didn't want to see anyone else doing it, because quite frankly, if you listen to this band, I don't want to know about it.

I'm not ready to hate this yet, I'll try giving it another chance later. But yeah, it sounded awful on my first listen.

his vocals are nearly unbearable Exactly. I've heard "These Things" quite a few times, and just could not stand listening to his voice. I don't know what the hell they did to transform it, but its almost like listening to a computer or robot sing the song instead of an actual human. My apologies go out to the real fans of this band, but I guess I'm just not one of them.

But this and Tear You Apart are awful.

I'd give "These Things" and "Tear You Apart" both A-'s and I bought their CD and had it autographed, so obviously I like these guys just fine, although I can easily see where you guys are coming from when you aren't too fond of their music. Yeah, Adam's no classically trained singer (I think his day job was being a DJ), but I just can't imagine it sounding right with any other type of vocals. The lyrics are filth and I love it for that. The soundtrack is pretty fresh for nowadays too, I'd say. That's about all I can say. I wouldn't recognize this new track yet.

This is my favorite SWR song thusfar. It's also the first one I heard, on XM back before Tear You Apart was big.

The not-so-latent sexuality in the lyrics is what sells it for me. It really is a niche sound, but if it works for you, I think it taps into that deviant part of people you might want to not dwell upon too often. Really cool when music can make you think in a new way, and for me, that's exactly what this does. I probably would've put this in the top half of the album's best songs, but I wouldn't have pegged it as a single at first listen. In fact, the song other than the first two singles, the only other song I would've guessed would be a single was "Red Flags and Long Nights" but I assume they didn't want to release it because they didn't want to rerelease "Tear You Apart". And I've heard this one on KNDD and Sirius a lot, but it's essentially something you'd hear mainly in a club, so I don't see this going too far.

He tries to channel Peter Murphy, Ian Curtis, and Dave Gahan simultaneously. That portentous monotone is intentional and derivative, to be sure. The thing is, I actually like SWR quite a bit. Despite their influences being so fucking obvious, this is most likely the reason I DO listen to them a lot. I'm in love with late 70's post-punk. Obviously no one can ever outshine the original masters, but as long as people keep trying, I'll probably keep buying. Most of the acts trying to be the new Wire/Gang of Four/Joy Division are actually quite good when it comes down to it. SWR is actually pretty critically acclaimed, albeit considerably less than The Futureheads or Franz Ferdinand.
Bottom line: This darkwave trend beats the shit out of nu-metal, I can attest to that.

I hated their first two singles, but I actually *gasp* kinda like this. This certainly isn't the most original song ever, but I think this is more musically interesting than the first two singles. Plus, the lyrics aren't as smutty, and even Adam's vocals don't grate on me as much in this song. YMMV.
