September 12th is the current temporary add date for the next Switchfoot single from their upcoming new album tentatively titled Oh! Gravity, which comes out on November 7th.
Man I hope this does better than Stars and We Are One Tonight. Although I think their last album was hurt more by the copy protection and the subsequent recall than the performance of their singles.

Wow, no kidding. Hasn't it only been almost one year since Nothing Is Sound came out? Too soon. "Stars" definitely did bomb on alternative, but they seemed to have some definite life left on Hot AC. Maybe they can regain their 'mojo' here (I smell a different topic) on their new album.

I agree...Beautiful Letdown was an awesome record but after hearing the singles from Nothing is Sound I didn't even give the album a listen. Since this band is on the soft side on the spectrum of music that alternative plays, I believe they will need a harder single similar to "Meant to Live" if they are regain the success achieved with Beautiful Letdown.

You should've listened to the album. It was really good. Singles don't always indicate an entire album's worth, although they should. And actually, I really liked Stars and We Are One Tonight, so I don't know how good my advice is going to be.

There was a reason why "Stars" did so poorly. It was just a weak, lifeless, and semi-annoying track. I never got to hear any other singles from that album.

I suppose I'll give the album a listen then but definately won't be as good as Beautiful Letdown.

Funny, I just thought about Switchfoot and whether they were going to do a new album on my way home . I liked Stars and I think it should have done much better.

And actually, I really liked Stars and We Are One Tonight, so I don't know how good my advice is going to be. They should have released "Lonely Nation" as the album's second single like originally planned. (They actually had shot a video for the track in the middle of the Salt Lake Desert.) That was easily (with the exception of "Politicians") the hardest track off of "Nothing Is Sound" and probably could have maintained their Alternative credibility. I'm really not sure that Switchfoot will have continuing Alternative success from here on out. I think they're going to have to settle for forging themselves as a Hot AC staple. Still, it certainly doesn't hurt producing another harder, hook-driven track to test at this format as a lead single. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I had thought it would come out in 2008, but this is great. Definitely looking forward to it. But I expect the first single to do worse than "Stars" at Alternative radio, and they'll just become a Hot AC band.

I suppose I'll give the album a listen then but definately won't be as good as Beautiful Letdown. I don't know; in some ways I actually think it's superior to "The Beautiful Letdown". "Nothing Is Sound" is interesting in that it almost sounds like their response to comments regarding if Switchfoot is a Christian band or not, and the album is basically to me a loud response suggesting, "No, we're not a Christian band!" with the songs being much more edgier-sounding overall and rather socially and politically conscious. "Lonely Nation" is a strong opening track, and "Happy Is A Yuppie Word" is also well-written. The album also has nice softer moments with "The Shadow Proves The Sunshine" and "Golden". Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I really can't say I like either album better than one another. They're both about parallel. I agree that Lonely Nation should have been a single at some point as I think it was the best song on the album, but lets see what this new material sounds like and how successful it will be.

Release date for the album has now changed to December 26th. And that certainly doesn't sound like a calculated grab from their label for retail success at all.

Sheesh, that's almost two months later than the original date. I guess its not even close to being done just yet.

Sheesh, that's almost two months later than the original date. I guess its not even close to being done just yet. Why would you assume that? An album doesn't need to be unfinished to be delayed. The album as far as I know is done. Probably the label wanted it bumped down to that date because Nothing Is Sound didn't really come out that long ago and they can market the album as a good holiday buy. Granted, it's coming out a day after Christmas, but it still takes advantage. Another good reason I can think of is that coming out so late in the year helps Switchfoot dodge any big names that might be released sometime in November or early December. As of now nothing is really coming out during either of those months, but there are still quite a few acts without proper release dates, so there's still time for the slots to fill up.

So, even though the add date has obviously been changed, Yahoo News reported today that the single will be the title track, "Oh! Gravity".
They also posted a tentative tracklisting which runs as follows.
01. "Oh! Gravity" 02. "American Dream" 03. "Awakening" 04. "Dirty Second Hands" 05. "In This Life" 06. "Amateur Lovers" 07. "Circles" 08. "Faust" 09. "Yesterdays" 10. "4:12" 11. "Burn Out Bright" 12. "Let Your Love"
They also said that the album will be a more harder-edged affair this time around than on Nothing Is Sound. Could be interesting. As I said before, I hope this album gets them back up top.

Pretty good just to judge from a 30 second clip, but I'm extremely eager to hear the full song.

based on the 30 second clip, it's not as good as Dirty Second Hands. Though Dirty Second Hands probably wouldn't have been a huge hit, I think it would have more long term success than this song

another song that won't end up doin anything. sorry switchfoot fans. I liked The Beautiful Letdown but it seems like that title fits their career (I know thats lame but its true). I thought they'd be big but guess I was wrong.

Just based on the clip, I think I already like it more than Dirty Second Hands. Not that Dirty Second Hands was bad, but this one stands out more.

I thought they'd be big but guess I was wrong. People keep forgetting - Switchfoot is huge in the Christian rock/pop world. Stars was a huge hit there and We Are One Tonight also made the Christian rock chart (another great track). So what if mainstream wants to give them the cold shoulder? Their core fans will still be there and they will still be able to sell albums to the Christian music world.

If I don't like this, I'm over liking Switchfoot. "The Beautiful Letdown" was average at least. The singles & "Gone" were great. The rest was so-so. The 2nd album was just blah with one or two good songs. "Stars" was just awful after a 2nd listen. Edit: Wow, their next album sales are now going to be even lower when I don't buy it.
