I'm sure they're crying over losing you as a customer.
Who or what is JoJo, anyway? Is she the new big pop star or what is this?

I've listened to about four or five songs from this upcoming album and I must say I am very unexpectedly blown away. I've never been a real Switchfoot fan - and haven't particularly loved anything they've done after "Learning To Breathe" and "Meant To Live" - but this blows me away. It almost sounds like a different band. Just far more "indie-sounding" or "experimental" than I've ever heard from them. Did they used to be a more experimental band?
I believe this is going for adds, but "Dirty Second Hands" should definitely be the second single. If the alternative panel is smart, stations should begin to re-welcome Switchfoot to the format. I don't see why these songs can't go, say top 20, especially if less radio-friendly material from Muse could do it.

You just sore towards her because she's so young she's already more famous than Switchfoot will ever be. & PS I still kind of like Switchfoot

They sound like they're having fun for once. Love the out-of-key piano.
It's not as loud as Stars was either. I like it.

Damn, with most of you giving this and other songs such good reviews, its annoying that we have to wait another 2 1/2 months for the new album. Ugh!

You just sore towards her because she's so young she's already more famous than Switchfoot will ever be. & PS I still kind of like Switchfoot Because I'm such a pophead, let me fill you in on the career of JoJo thus far as a pop musician. She scored a #1 hit almost exactly two years with "Leave (Get Out)" and another top 15 or so hit "Baby It's You" on the pop format. Her current single, "Too Little Too Late" is well on its way to #1 and could get there in the next week or two. Switchfoot have never dominated any format except Christian, which has a strong following but isn't particularly commercial, but have scored three top 15 singles and four top 50 singles here at alternative. They have been around much longer. In the end, I would call Switchfoot the bigger band because they have made more albums and sold more albums. JoJo, in the end, could wind up the bigger artist because her songs are being marketed straight to pop, and especially if her career lasts another three to four years, I bet she scores more hit songs because she does have an incredible singing voice. So there ya go...how did I do?

*applauds jdmasta289 for a summary well done*
I really like "Oh, Gravity!" -- wasn't expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. Am also quite liking "Dirty Second Hands." Suddenly, this record is a potential buy for me. I guess I had been thinking that Switchfoot was going to settle into safe MOR rock, so it's great to see that this isn't the case.

I understand the facts as they are and grudgingly accept them. The bubblegum crowd has never ever appealed to me on any level. I honestly don't see the appeal. There's good pop out there that doesn't revolve around the latest teenage sensation to become a sparkle in a PR man's eye. But to each their own, I suppose.

So there ya go...how did I do? Switchfoot has sold more albums ONLY because they have had more albums & I'm very for sure after this album era ends JOJO will be the winner. & Switchfoot has been marketed to more than just Christian music. Look how big "Dare You To Move" & "Meant To Live" were. Those were marketed to pop, too. It just so happens all their other singles flopped miserably, like JoJo's "Not That Kinda Girl." I haven't followed how they've did on alternative but I'm guessing from what you said, it's decent. I am just not thrilled they put a song out like this that is an OBVIOUS flop. I don't even think it'll do anything on alternative or any format of music. That's just me though. I really did like them back around "The Beautiful Letdown" but anymore, they're disappointing. & the more I talk about them on the board, the less I enjoy them.

Well, maybe they just want to go in a more serious (i.e. "experimental") direction with this album. Or maybe they just want to return to their roots and market more specifically to a Christian audience, and not attempt to cross over with every single like they have in the past.
I mean, from an artistic standpoint, I'm impressed with these new songs. But, yeah, I can see where you're coming from from a commercial standpoint. It's too bad, because I believe these should do reasonably well.

^I don't hate Christian music but I'd never listen to it. I just wish they'd find a similar sound to "The Beautiful Letdown" again.

This is a sore issue for me, so I'm going to be brief. For one, I don't really think they've changed all that much from album to album, but even so, do you really want them to keep making the same kind of album again and again? As good as that might sound right away, it would get repetitive and boring. I wouldn't want The Beautiful Letdown II, I want Nothing Is Sound. I don't want III, I want Oh Gravity. It's interesting to hear artists try new things and mess around. I just like to let albums be as they are and not let myself expect to hear it again. I'm actually more disappointed now when an artist doesn't change their sound than when they do. It keeps things exciting and unpredictable.

^Word. “It’s that mixed drink you have to pour out so you can start with the pure stuff. And go back to the reason you loved music to begin with. We took a chance on this record, not to sound selfish, but to make something for ourselves. What other people think can’t change our minds about these songs. And that’s a good feeling. Because either you believe in it or you don’t.” - Jon Foreman (From www.musicremedy.com/articles/3239 - a 'preview' article on the album.) LMAO!
I really can't understand what it is that's so special about her. To be fair though, she's certainly outlasted my expectations. Looks like she may be a longer flash in the pan. She still won't be remembered in 2008 tho. Remember Dream? Exactly!

Wow, talk about a pleasant surprise. I was so shocked when my station played this song and then the DJ announced it as the new Switchfoot song - I thought it was some indie-punk band or something. I was kinda hoping these guys would go away, but I may have to reconsider that assessment now. This is really impressive.

If anyone has time, go and listen to "Dirty Second Hands" on their myspace. It's really impressive. IMO, they held back a lot of experimentalism back for their last two records and still had a lot of talent to show, which they evidently did for this album.
How would I characterize this style of music? It really sounds nothing like Augustana or the Fray, two bands they might have been lumped with in the past.

I listened to that song and this is like a totally different band. I am really really looking forward to the new album now. Its almost like what Crossfade tried to sound like on their latest album Falling Away but couldn't. I don't know how accurate that statement is, but I'm listening to that album currently so its fresh in my mind.

That's a real disappointment since The Beautiful Letdown sold 2.6 million copies, and I don't really think either album was better than one another. I guess this was a good idea to experiment with their sound and see what happens. By the way, penance how's the new album? I keep getting banned over and over. Non-sharing bastards.

I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet cause I've been so busy with work. And as far as I know, Switchfoot did go gold, at least probably for shipped units.

I can't help but think it's pretty cool...what they're trying to do here. I wouldn't have thought it would work for a band like Switchfoot (I don't think it will for Finger Eleven), but I think they've pulled off a Franz-Ferdinand like video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1OSxWGZI0
