For the people who live in and around the NYC area and are fans of KTU, what do you make of their new format?
"Listen to KTU’s NO REPEAT WORKDAY! From 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday, KTU will be playing a larger variety of dance hits with NO repetition. The new KTU NO REPEAT WORKDAY. It's a reason to celebrate so get up and DANCE!"
The thing is though that they don't play a lot of different current dance songs. Kelly Osbourne, PCD's, Mynt, Reina, Kelly Clarkson, Sylver, Gwen, Narcotic, D.H.T. and maybe five or six others.
How is that supposed to last 9 HOURS?
What do you make of this?

In fact, I say they play more oldies than currents.

All this means is more awful disco songs being played on the station.

Most misleading post title ever! I was seriously in shock for about 3 seconds before I read what the "format change" was.

I'm sorry about that, but you have no idea how sad this makes me... and it kind of is. It's a transition to older songs. There is WNEW here in NY, and of course WLTW plays oldies too every so often, and then there is WKJY on LI, and some A/C stations play this type of music too. To me, playing Sylver only once in 9 HOURS is ridiculous, and is a big change... perhaps not a format change, but to go from one week of playing Syler 67 times to playing it 23 is a very big thing to someone such as myself and I thought others would think the same thing.
This:
is my point. Why are they going to play A LOT more oldies then what they used to 45 of 168 hours a week. That's 27% of the time, and that 27% is when I listen to them most.

If they had any taste at all, they'd play less campy disco tunes from 1973 and instead just expand their playlist on currents, by adding more dance remixes of Pop songs, more pure dance songs in general, and even Will Smith "Switch" type of Pop-club songs. NYC radio is getting more stale by the second, which is sad for a city that's supposed to be leading world trends.

So true... I haven't listened to the radio in ages. NYC radio has become horrible. The same songs are on all the time. When I read the post title I was like what in the hell could they possibly be changing to.
It still holds true that this is bad news because if I ever did listen to the radio I would listen to KTU. They act like the songs they play on their station are the only dance songs available anywhere. There's a wide variety of tracks that they could be playing right now like Jenna Drey.

I have tuned into their online stream from time to time, and recently it has been really stale. In a 6 hour period about a week ago, I heard Miquel Brown's "So Many Men, So Little Time" and Deborah Cox's "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven [Valentin Mix]" 2 times each. As I was about to close WMP that was playing the stream, SHOTWTH was starting to play again! And most of their currents are just not current anymore. Just because certain songs tested well doesn't mean that they should keep playing them over and over. I used to consider WKTU a very good station. Right now, I'm just not feeling it anymore. It sounds like the station is going through the period Party 92.7 went through prior to it flipping to Power 92.7. However, it doesn't seem like CC will flip the format anytime soon.

I called and complained about their little change and asked them to consider changing that with the start of the fall. I also sent an email addressing it as well as their stale-ness.
I know it won't do anything but at least I voiced my viewpoints.
For me, the glory days of KTU ended with the close of 2002. That is probably the last time they've ever been remotely current with any dance and had a decent variety of tracks. 2003 and 2004 saw hard times on their stations, with LOADS of recurrents. 2005 is continuing that trend.

I sent an email as well upon recieving their every other weekly survey. My next step is calling them up. Z100 here in NYC was so headstrong about 10 songs in a row about a year and a half ago, and it lasted for only about 4 months if I remember correctly. That sucked, cause they played 10 songs and then commercials, 2 songs, and then more commericals and so on. If enough people call and complain about it, they'll have to change it, otherwise they'll lose out on listeners, such as myself, a very loyal one.

Of course, they will choose which ones work for them and stuff, but if you don't try they won't do much. Sometimes they assume that if people are not saying anything, everything is fine. I think Z100 has a greater chance of improving than WKTU. I think WKTU will change their tune if and when the next Arbitron ratings come in and their rating is lower.

Suggest songs for them to pick for adds. Usually if you request a song that's not already on a station's playlist, they don't even consider it because they just assume you're working for that artist's label or something.

They would get a little suspicious if a non-added song starts getting an unusual amount of requests. I did that with a couple stations in my area and they actually added the songs I suggested. Those "pump it or dump it" segments that some stations can help get new songs on the air based on what people do or don't respond to. But many stations will take only a handful of votes in deciding this, and then it's not a fair representation of what the public thinks. They usually only care about the ratings though.

I sent an e-mail to Z100 about it's urban leaning playlist ( and maybe a request for Gorillaz might've slipped in...) and I think I might've e-mailed KTU about it. I say we all just e-mail them and pressure them to add more new mixes and dance/club songs to their playlist. Most misleading post title ever! I was seriously in shock for about 3 seconds before I read what the "format change" was. I almost fell off my chair right there, dude!

I almost feel like printing a retraction or something.
I AM SORRY, lol.
The only thing I can say is is that I guess the good people at Memorex are going to be seeing more of my money cause I'm gonna have to burn more cds to keep up with KTU's crappiness.
